Obviously there is going to be an even closer connection to Ohio State defensive players since Coombs took over this past year. Cooper is definitely a decent day 3 prospect. Would fit that bigger OLB role that we are looking to fill.

I believe we will draft two OLBs this year and one IDL. 1 bigger OLB who can slide inside on 3rd downs, 1 more speed rush guy, and then a bigger DL to help Simmons inside.

Might be the case of signing 1 veteran OLB in free agency then drafting 1 in the first two days of the draft then bringing in some UDFA, with how many needs we have this year and Vrabel's unwillingness to rotate OLB how many do we really need on the roster anyway.

Simmons is the best player on defense.  Getting him some help inside should be a priority to help reduce his double teams or get the new guy singled up.  Given the lack of the IDLs who can pass rush available in the draft and the large number of edge rushers available, you can make a good case for IDL in the 1st and an edge rusher later.

True, but you want to flip that position around depth and talent wise it’s not a bad idea to double dip, especially if their is a guy available with some good traits later in the draft. We also have to prepare for Landry to be leaving as well. He’s going into the last year of his deal, so drafting with the thought of developing players for 2022 is also smart of them.

Totally agree with you. Only EDGE guys I would draft in the first would be Paye or Rousseau. All the other ones are on the next tier and with how deep the draft is at the position we could wait till round 2 or 3, depending on who we sign in Free Agency.

IDL or CB will likely be the target in the first assuming we don’t trade down.

Exactly why in my pre Senior Bowl mock draft I had us taking Alabama IDL Christian Barmore at pick #22.

Seems almost certain that either Barmore or Nixon will be available at #22.

If McNeil is available at 53 I would consider him depending on FA and who is taken in Rd 1.  He typically lined up over the C at NC State and was been able to terrorize the backfield.  He should easily slide into a 3T with his speed and agility.  This kid will get some sacks and QB pressures.

I can't see Barmore being there at 22. If we can all see what a stud he is, you know every team out there can too.

The QB, OL, WR, and CB will go before IDL in this draft. Good chance there is 4 QB/4 WR-TE/4-5 OL/3 CB. Sprinkle a few LB/EDGE in there and he can easily be there at 22.

I say it every year and it sounds elementary but only 21 guys can go before pick 22.

Do any of you think the Tampa defense and rushing 4 every down is the way forward in the AFC??

I like the defense because you can field it relatively cheaply and focus resources on the offense.

I don't think it's the only or even the best way to build a defense and plenty of teams are going to, some successfully and some not, try to find different ways to build a defense.

The one thing that is consistent from my point of view is the ability to apply pressure.  Pressure causes mistakes, disrupts timing, and makes it much more difficult to execute on offense.

Buddy Ryan was right all along. Schemes and techniques change but applying pressure reduces other weaknesses in the defense. I agree with interior line pressure approach to the draft. Undersized DE-OLB types seem to be rather easily pushed away from the pocket often...

Buddy Ryan: The QB can't throw the ball when he has tears in his eyes

God I loved Buddy
