Worst-case scenario, he ends up looking like a complete idiot, alienates people even further, and loses the election by a landslide. But things are already headed in that direction anyway...they have nothing to lose by trying a hail-mary to win some of those votes back. I don't think they care. He is pushing for this because he believes he can corner Biden over his stuttering issue. He will make sure to up his lifts to four inches during the debates. Exactly why Trump's making noise again about the NFL players taking a knee during the anthem. For sure he'll bring it up on Saturday, saving the US from such an pearl clutching atrocity. Never mind that it's June and football is months away. Ignore the very real threat to the attendees themselves, Covid19, that will surely will be downplayed. It's a fervent re-start of the culture war, exploiting whatever elements he can because he doesn't give 2 shits about how this country gets through 2020. Essentially it's all a huge show, very little of it is true, and much of it is wrapped up in the air of aggressive, over the top, machismo woofing and vilifying that's just ridiculous if it weren't so potentially dangerous. But the biggest appeal behind the show is the full on display of loyalty to YOUR GUY no matter what emo stupid is going on. The debates would be seen as an extension of those and any Trump one-liners, no matter how incoherent or inane, will be proudly broadcast by his sleazy campaign team and gobbled up "you hear what Trump said!! Considering he will get the chance to fill potentially both RBG and Breyer’s seats if he gets a second term is enough reason to vote in November on its own. Trump totally sees it as a positive to keep any wayward evangelicals inline, blinders firmly affixed, nose pinched and only too happy to vote for the pos. Best pivot opportunity for him. 3.5 years in he’s not going to broaden his base in this crisis. Again, he’s gotta scare ‘em good and the immigrant song has waned dramatically.
