I honestly believed the Trump camp would do everything in their power to have the debates cancelled entirely.

He's never been good at working off-script and thinking on his feet....but after the stresses of the past few months, he's deteriorated into a complete train-wreck.   He can't even do a simple Q&A session without making himself look foolish and idiotic.   Every time he goes off script, it's a disaster.

There's obviously a significant portion of his fan base who are absolutely rabid and embrace every word he says, no matter how inane or nonsensical.   He can do no wrong in their eyes...and that's fine.   Every cult has its believers.

I'm guessing these debates are aimed at the conservative-minded folk who want to support him but don't like what they've been seeing.   His approval ratings have plummeted...his fan base is starting to erode.   At this point, he has nothing to lose....his advisors need to put him out there as much as possible to don the MAGA hat, wave the flag, and try to win back those votes.

Worst-case scenario, he ends up looking like a complete idiot, alienates people even further, and loses the election by a landslide.    But things are already headed in that direction anyway...they have nothing to lose by trying a hail-mary to win some of those votes back.

I don't think they care. Clinton destroyed Trump twice and no one batted an eye.

You’re over complicating it. He is pushing for this because he believes he can corner Biden over his stuttering issue. He will make sure to up his lifts to four inches during the debates.

The candidate that is behind always wants more debates.

Exactly, it’s getting Hail Mary time

Trump is down 20 points among evangelicals

Exactly why Trump's making noise again about the NFL players taking a knee during the anthem.  For sure he'll bring it up on Saturday, saving the US from such an pearl clutching atrocity.  Never mind that it's June and football is months away.  Ignore the very real threat to the attendees themselves, Covid19, that will surely will be downplayed. It's a fervent re-start of the culture war, exploiting whatever elements he can because he doesn't give 2 shits about how this country gets through 2020.

I can’t imagine any Trump supporter, or anyone in his administration wants him on stage in front of the world answering unscripted questions.

His supporters absolutely want it.  Trump could answer every question with, "tehf dit ucomicurtin" and they'd all claim he owned the debate.

A couple of years back, I likened the spectacle of Trump rallies to pro wrestling.  Essentially it's all a huge show, very little of it is true, and much of it is wrapped up in the air of aggressive, over the top, machismo woofing and vilifying that's just ridiculous if it weren't so potentially dangerous.  But the biggest appeal behind the show is the full on display of loyalty to YOUR GUY no matter what emo stupid is going on.

The debates would be seen as an extension of those and any Trump one-liners, no matter how incoherent or inane, will be proudly broadcast by his sleazy campaign team and gobbled up "you hear what Trump said!!  Here, I bought 3 Tshirts with it on the back!!"

Biden has been playing a very safe campaign and letting Trump bury himself. This is about trying to get Biden out there and create gaffs for Trump to attack.

That is fine, because for every silly thing Biden says, Trump will say multiple racist, divisive, illiterate things.

It's also why he actually LOVES the last two Supreme court decisions. He's harping on the court being too lib and pushing the fact that he needs another term to continue to fill it.

Considering he will get the chance to fill potentially both RBG and Breyer’s seats if he gets a second term is enough reason to vote in November on its own.

Agreed. Trump totally sees it as a positive to keep any wayward evangelicals inline, blinders firmly affixed, nose pinched and only too happy to vote for the pos.   Best pivot opportunity for him. 3.5 years in he’s not going to broaden his base in this crisis. Again, he’s gotta scare ‘em good and the immigrant song has waned dramatically. But you know that’s coming back, too, wrapped up with sanctuary cities affected by the demonstrations.
