What happened to Marcus Mariota?

All Mariota's issues were the same issues talent evaluators warned about when he came from college to the pros.

Nothing changed.

When the running game is going and he can run play action and throw predefined reads he can do well.

Defenses now understand this and make life harder by taking away what he does well.

Pretty simple really

I actually more or less agree with this one.  #9 is on the money with his question(s) here.  What did happen?

It's a question not near enough N'ville fans are asking.

Personally, I think Mularkey and Robiskie and Michaels "fixed" Marcus.  Then LaFleur and O'Hara came along and "fixed" him some more.

He's no longer the natural decision maker and thrower he once was.  That player so many of the pundits in that highlight video raved about.

Pay no attention Stephen, he has less brain power than a retarded sloth.

It's obvious something changed.  Even though I posted highlights, you can't find that Mariota anywhere in the last two seasons.

Well, Stephen is complaining about the sheer number of threads dealing with this subject, and on that he has a point.  It's been hashed and rehashed nearly to death.

But this thread approaches the subject from a perspective I happen to agree with.  He clearly wasn't the same player in '17 &'18 that he was in '15 & '16.

Why?

I agree with the idea of looking harder at that, and the reasons behind it.

Now, @titanruss did bring up the '18 nerve damage and that may have been a part of it.

Along with trust in his receivers.

Douglas, Wright, Delanie, Johnson and Matthews were way above Sharpe, Taylor and Davis in terms of experience.  Of course Decker was too, but that drop rate at critical times...

Watching that highlight video leads me to believe Marcus was coached into this condition.  In '15 & '16 he was stepping up, throwing on the move, and drilling a lot of passes.

Then watch some of those old Robiskie interviews where he talks about watching Marcus and his "No-No-No-No, Oh, okay" reactions to Mariota's plays/passes.  He hated the way Marcus would roll to his right and throw back into the middle of the field.  But Marcus never threw an INT doing that in '16, and Robiskie admits that.  And he threw on the move all the time.  That HL video is full of throws on the move.

Throws he doesn't make, or complete much anymore.  Why?  Why not?

WTF happened?

Face it, you can't fix what's wrong until you've identified the problem.

Try watching that video dumbass, and then explain all those "predefined" reads.

The simplest thing about this issue is you trying to explain something you don't understand.

That’s cute, especially from a dude who just parrots what other people say and tries too hard to be funny.

Its the front office's fault for settling on Mularkey in the first damn place.

IDK, but there is a big difference in his play.  I was a fan of his and labored through 2017, then I just lost it when 2018 started.  It's down time so I wonder why I was willing to give him so much slack in 2017.  It was because before then he looked like a real NFL QB.  I don't know if you looked at the 2015-2016 highlights, if you didn't scroll over to where the real football starts.  Next look at his 2017-2018 highlights.  They have a bunch of clips of him running the ball and worse handing the ball off.  Most of the  throws were one read and the ball comes out slower.  Also, his highlights include a lot of runs.  This is 17&18.  He's much too injury prone to risk signing long term, but it is interesting seeing the dramatic change in his play.

Compare RGlll before and after too and you'll see a big difference. The answer is pretty clear.

In the NFL it's not how you start, it's how you adjust.

Ok.  RG3 did tear his knee up badly.  I am just presenting an observation.  I just see two different players.  The one pre-Chicago had skills to stand in the pocket and throw the ball.  Maybe, he's a dimwit and can't learn the playbook.  I won't even rule out that possibility.  Just looking for answers because we are in for another year of this, at least that's what it looks like.

If he is RG3 or a dimwit, the Titans would be stupid not to grab the best QB they can get this year as the future starter.

They adjusted to him, and he didn't.

Again, who do you think is the best QB they could get this year? I think another reason everyone is pretty okay with giving Mariota this year is because the QB crop doesn’t look so appealing this year.

Maybe they'll deem Lock to be coachable enough to take him.  He's got the prototypical traits and upside you want from a franchise QB.

I don’t like his mechanics. But who knows?

He definitely appears to need at least a year to smooth a lot of things out before he begins developing bad habits.  Even then, who knows.  But the talent is great and I'll believe in him if we take him.
