socaltitan Posted August 25, 2017 Report Share Posted August 25, 2017 Obviously Brown will be nickel LB this year. He's looked impressive. But it's got me wondering about him in the future. If he continues to impress, do you develop him as a future starter? Is he the successor to Woodyard's spot? Or is it better to leave him as nickel LB? He's not a big guy, which would have me a bit concerned about how he'd hold up. But Woodyard's not a big guy either and the staff has him in that spot. Whether they view Brown as future starter or very valuable backup could have an effect on what we do in next year's draft. It's a long ways away, but looking at how our team is set up right now, there's pretty good odds of it being a front 7 pick, most likely a LB pick. AussieTitanFan08 Posted August 25, 2017 Report Share Posted August 25, 2017 keen to see Jayon Brown during the regular season and how he holds up against the run, would be great if he could develop as a long term starter at LB. as for next years draft, a young OLB looks like a priority, we have to find long term replacements of Orakpo/Morgan, not sure Dodd is going to provide enough pressure/sacks off the edge to be a starting OLB for us. I'm not overly concerned if he ever starts as long as he is playing all the nickel and dime snaps. But down the road he could certainly end up a starter. Woodward and Williamson are average starters at best. And Williamson is in the last year of his contract. The same will likely happen for Brown who, imo, is a better player than Williamson who will likely push a good but not great player in Woodyard to the bench. Brown was a steal and will be a great player for us. Williamson has been one of if not the best run stuffing ILB in the NFL over the past couple seasons, he's not going to be pushed to the bench. Woodyard is a somewhat worse version of Williamson. If Brown pushes anyone to the bench it'd be Woodyard. What's most likely is he pushes no one to the bench and is just the nickel ILB. Brown hasn't proven much of anything yet other than he can cover 2nd and 3rd team tight ends in the preseason, he's done nothing of note in run defense. His coverage abilities are promising but people talking about how he's going to push either one of Williamson or Woodyard to the bench just based off what he's doing vs 2nd and 3rd string offensive players is hilarious.
