You're right, I want my #1 CB in the slot when Hilton, Hopkins, and Robinson will be mostly lined up outside.

If Ryan is not locked on those 3 every game, all game, he wasn't worth it.

This guy just doesn't understand football.

If Logan Ryan looks like this in the regular season, then it's time to be critical. Sure you would've liked him to be better last night, but it's a preseason performance. I've seen too many instances where teams who look good in preseason proceed to look like shit in the regular season and vice versa.

I did say in the past that NE has a way of making their players look better than they actually are which is a bit of concern I had with Ryan, though hoping the fact that JR scouted him and saw him in NE would help mitigate that concern.

I was one of the biggest proponents of signing Ryan but @JakePA_Titan is speaking truth in this thread. If all Logan can do for us is play inside then it doesn't justify the signing. I wanted him because I felt he could be our #1 guy and be effective outside. Now, one bad preseason game isn't enough to make everyone panic but if this continues it's legitimate cause for concern. Ryan was awful last night and there is no sugar coating it.

We were torched in the slot last year. That's more than enough reasoning for me.

This is wrong......

Teams are playing 3 WRs sets like 70% of the time, the slot receivers are huge mismatch problems. Look at Welker, Edelman, Baldwin, Cobb and Beasily. The best offenses get a ton of production from the slot.

In their primes Rolle and Finny moved inside and played the slot too. Outside is easier to play CB, you have the sideline and help over the top. Back in the glory days of 2000 the Titans played Sidney outside on the #1 defense with Rolle in the slot. Both were def the best CB on the team.

The game is played in between the hash marks more and more.

If Ryan only played in the slot but did it well he would be worth every penny

If you look at how NE has typically built their teams, it's geared towards the middle of the field. TE, slot WR,, pass catching RB on offense. On D, it's guys like McCourty, Hightower, etc. And in the past it was guys like Harrison, Bruschi, Wilfork, etc

I think the Titans have vastly upgraded the middle of the field on D. We were shredded there last season. Decker and Taylor in the slot are big upgrades as well there on offense.

If Ryan plays a real good slot CB I'm satisfied. He was never a shutdown CB in NE, I wouldn't expect it here. if you thought he was going to be a shutdown #1 CB, I think those expectations are misguided

I know bongo is not the most favorite person on the board, but he's been been on the Reed hype train for awhile. Last night what I was most impressed with is that the kid knew when to get his head around and stuck to his man.

There's obviously differing opinions of PFF around here but they do a very good job with the draft, I'd say they're right  good amount more than most of the "guru's". And they loved Reed. Loved him. Had him as a legit 1st rd, shutdown man cover corner.

It is weird & they even mentioned this. He went out week after week & dominated. He has all the traits, sub 4.4 speed, great vertical, fluid hips, ball awareness, etc. But there just wasn't any interest in him. Maybe we have something.

As for Ryan I'm kind of in the middle of Mythos & OMan. There's one thing to be versatile enough to move inside & out. It's a whole other thing to only being able to play inside because you can't handle outside WR's.

Yes, teams play more 3 wide then ever & there's some tough slot guys but the bottom line is the star WR's play outside over 80% of the time.

But either way Ryan probably makes more sense inside then out for this team. Sims is a pure, traditional press corner with good length. Adoree, despite his height, had the most trouble with the shifter WR's. He's excellent at flipping his hips, tracking guys down the sideline, and getting his head around to make a play on the ball.

These two posts need to put in BOLD for those complaining.

Also scine needs to put up the Jake Locker preseason stats again for those complaining.

I know it's a pipe dream, but I would love to see him against the ones next game or the third. He just seemed so damn good last night, I know it's lol preseason and he's going against scrub receivers.  But all he did was impress me. My girlfriend was like "who is 24" he's every where. (She's a saints fan). Kid played the run well, tackled well, was on his his man like glue, and perhaps the most important part of being a corner, knew when to turn his damn head and locate the ball and not get called for PI because he was looking for the ball. If they try and put him on the practice squad and he keeps playing like this, he's as good as gone.

Show me another slot corner who makes $10M/year. That's the market rate for high end starting outside corners. You may think it's worth paying slot CBs that much, but clearly the rest of the league does not. And if you're sure he's destined to play in the slot, what do you think of the coaching staff using important practice and preseason snaps with him mostly on the outside?

It it hurts to say this but I agree with Jake. People documenting what was as an obviously bad performance by Ryan are being accused of overreaction by the homer cohort.

For those going on about the slot here a very good analogy for you.

In chess the middle four squares are the most important since it allows for a lot of movement all over the board. Talk to anybody who plays high level chess they will tell you how important it is.

Out of all the "skilled" chess pieces the most important piece to control the middle is the Knight. It seems like a boring useless peice since it can't move from end to end of the board like the others. Slot corners and recievers are much the same.
