Mularkey left the Bills because of organizational dysfunction. There's a reason why the Bills haven't been to the playoffs since the MCM. McDermott is their 7th HC since then. They tried to force JP Losman on Mularkey. He never wanted him in the first place.

Mularkey's record is what it is. But he coached for the Bills and the Jags with Losman and Gabbert as the QB. Sometimes the HC gets too much credit, but he also gets too much blame. If you're a bad organization with a bad QB, I don't care who the HC is. You're doomed to be terrible. Mularkey found himself in that situation twice. You have zero chance of succeeding.

The Bears are the perfect example of that. John Fox was in the SB a few years ago. Find it hard to believe he became that much worse of a HC with the Bears. Clearly there are significant differences in terms of personnel and organization between the Bears and Broncos. Jack Del Rio is another. Hey people laughed when the Raiders hired him. But now look at him. Because he has a QB and the Raiders organization has finally started to get their shit together much like the Titans

Mularkey now has a QB and an improving organizational structure. I definitely get why he wasn't an exciting hire. But he did an excellent job last year. We'll see what happens.

Luke Walton was great with the Warriors last year, terrible with the Lakers this year. Clearly a huge difference in personnel and management. Sometimes the HC get too much blame. It's easy to pile on the HC. I think bad organizations like to make the HC the scapegoat. There's blame involved everywhere.

Just like how Mariota has things needed to improve and be more consistent, so does Mularkey.  @Tnasty pointed out, the offense came out slow and flat in a good number of games.  That I attribute to guys getting used to each other, a new offense, and some on Mularkey's coaching.  Now with the new additions of draft guys, the offense should be expected to come out faster.

Mularkey is in a perfect situation to succeed.  He has the players who love him, an owner who adores him, and a sharp talent evaluator GM who knows how to improve the team.  Very few HC's can say they have all those things.  Titans could have worse HC's like Chip Kelly!

Didn't he just make steak out of beef patties last year?

Seems to me he proved how good of a coach he is last year.

I mean, unless people are giving all the credit to JR last year, even for the coaching. Which I know some people would love to do.

The op was not meant to be anything negative against Mularkey which apparently was not made very clear.  The point is more that the franchise/team as a whole is finally at a point where they are not so devoid of talent that you can't even critique the head coach at all because he has had nothing to work with.   I think we are now at a point where we get to see just how good Mularkey's system can be.  I hope we explode under his leadership now, but until now he's had a very good excuse if they weren't successful.  I'm very optimistic because of the improvement seen last year, but I guess I'm also greedy-with this much APPARENT talent on the team now, I want to see(as we all do) continued improvement and no steps backward.  I'm getting old and this things gotta happen before I'm six feet under.

There isn't one poster on this message board who wouldn't sign up right now to have Mariota not only have Brees/Rodgers's careers but also have the same amount of Super Bowl victories as each guy has.  And if they say they wouldn't sign up for that they're lying.

Some of us have waited most of our lives to see the franchise win a Super Bowl.  And now 1 won't be good enough?  Come on.

I'm not comparing the 2 but do you think Cubs fans going into last year said that winning last year's World Series wasn't good enough?

I'm not saying Brees is a failure for only winning one Superbowl.  But, he has to threaten passing records the last few years to reach 7-9.  There is only so much a QB can do when your defense is giving up 30+ every week.

I give credit to Mularkey for dialing down the dumb drive killing trickeration plays from the first 4-6 games. Lets hope we never see Marcus faking a fumble, then tossing the ball to a doomed Murray.  What's the over/under for Statue of Liberty plays this coming season?

Head coach has two main jobs, assemble a quality staff and set the tenor for the team. So far Mularkey has done both well, he's raised  the level of accountability for the players without alienating them as has seemingly assembled a very competent staff despite the geriatric jokes that can bring out the potential of his players. He ditched Horton after his interim year and he canned his ST coach when he wasn't getting the job done. He also got rid of Cox when it became clear he wasn't getting it done and I'm sure he had a lot to do with not bringing Jmac back; I'm sure he was consulted on the DGB trade too.

No matter how much you guys beg for it, our ownership, players and most of our fans are not going to decide Mularkey's fate based on his last stops. They're going to base it on his last year.

You guys just need to move on. He's not a former Jags coach or former Bills coach ... he's the Titans coach, who finished 9-7 last year.

Yep. Time to let the hate go and hope these old fucks can take us to the promised land. As long as MM is healthy there's no excuses, but there's also only minutiae to argue about in terms of dislike of the product they produced.

I don't have a problem with him and never really did.  I especially liked the fact he brought in all these old guys to teach these young kids a thing or two.  There were some growing pains, but everyone adjusted and things looked damned good there for awhile.  And they beat the toughest teams on the schedule.  Teams that everyone here predicted losses against.  KC, DEN, GB were all huge wins.

I just wonder where this offense is headed, because I think the difference between last year and this year will be pretty stark.  And I know a lot of people around here may not want to hear it, but being different last year was good for this team.

Call me crazy, but I'm afraid this years team will be/do/look more conventional and less like hard-nosed, tough-guy, smashmouth football.

Your concerns are understandable.
