9 Nines
I hate blowing leads like they have but to even be up like that in a couple games to blow a lead is encouraging for this team. As bad as the Bills were playing and with so many of their good offensive players out, an NFL team would have to try not to have a lead. The Titans should have been up big at half time. They don't look quite ready to yet, whether it be the coaches fault, players fault, or a combo of both.
IsntLifeFunny
I told myself I wasn't going to post after today's debacle, and I probably won't write much the rest of the week. However, I am beyond frustrated with the game management today from Ken Whisenhunt. Before I get into it I still think he's the man for this job. The team is clearly better. They just need to learn how to win. They're young, they're so much better than last year it's not even funny, and I do believe that later in the season into next year games like today and the Colts game will be good learning experiences. It doesn't make me feel better seeing the AFC outside of the 4 teams who will end up winning the divisions probably with ease becoming a clusterfuck with two playoff spots up for grabs that will eventually be won by mediocre teams likely with mediocre records. Today may end up being a big, big loss. That being said, the game management today was atrocious. 1. 4th and 2 at the Buffalo 37 yard line. You have to, absolutely have to go for it there. Whisenhunt's not the only coach who would punt there. I think the majority of coaches would. And they'd all be wrong. To win games you can't coach scared. Punting there is coaching scared and not to lose. 2. 4th and 2 from the Buffalo 3. I don't have as much of a problem with this as they had to get points. However, I'd have liked to have seen them go for it. 3. Timeout with 11 seconds before the two minute warning on 3rd and 2. I'd be okay with this if it was 3rd and 7 or something. NOT 3rd and two. You make a stop after the two minute warning and THEN call the timeout. As it turned out maybe it didn't matter but they did get the ball back with some time left. That extra timeout could have paid big dividends. 4. 4th and 3 at the Buffalo 24 yard line up 10-7. I had the biggest problem with this decision. Did Ken Whisenhunt not learn his lesson two weeks ago against the Colts that being up by 6 points does no good and that the difference between 3 and 6 points is not a big difference when you're talking late in a football game? In the Indy game he elected to kick a FG on 4th and maybe 2 deep in Indy territory, keeping the game within reach. It backfired. Then he goes and does it again today. Ken, you had a chance to end the game there. Instead you take the 3 and Buffalo gets the ball back down by less than a score. Inexcusable. 5. Punting on 4th and 11 with 1 timeout and the two minute warning with 3 minutes left. The move ended up working. However, I hated it. You need to keep the ball. The Titans put themselves in a position where just 1 first down would end the game. Giving the ball back to the other team was not acceptable under any circumstances. And if you knew you were going to punt what was with that play call on 3rd and long to Walker for 2 yards? Outside of the play call on that 3rd and long play I'm not going to sit and rip specific play calls. I'm sure that if executed correctly more would have worked. Players make mistakes. But the Titans could increase their chances of winning these close games with better game management by the head coach. Four out of five punts (I think) were awful calls. The man has no testicular fortitude. If we were down 7 you punt, because a FG ends it, but down 1? No fucking way.

No fucking way. it worked out because he knew the D would stop them and they did, so why have a problem with that and he managed the clock well there too. It just didnt fall our way its ok, this team is having growing pains necessary to turn this franchise around.
Face
Does anyone know that program the NFL has that measures the % a team has of winning the game, all throughout the game? It adjusts up & down throughout. Anyway, with 7 mins left in the Colt game the model had us as a 99% chance of winning. No, these losses aren't common. There terrible losses. nine
Worst coaching call of the day was on LeBeau/Horton for playing man coverage on 3rd and 23. You have to play safe zone there and keep your CBs facing Taylor. In fairness to LeBeau/Horton....even a gifted runner like Taylor has little chance of gaining 25+ yards and converting the first down. They were okay with giving up 10-15 yards....hell, even 20 yards would have resulted in a punt. This game reminded me a lot of the Titans/Eagles game in 2006. The Eagles D basically shut down the Titans offense...but Vince Young killed them with his legs. In an ironic twist of fate, Taylor "Vinse Yung'ed" the Titans. Without going into details on today's calls he should be more aggressive on 4th down in plus territory. And you don't compile the putrid record Whiz has without being a poor game manager This was exactly what I was afraid of when Whisenhunt punted on the game's opening drive. Five minutes into the game, I said to my wife, "I hope that decision doesn't end up being the difference in the game." Then he went and did it again later in the game....and whaddya know, the Titans end up losing by three. I'm sure Whisenhunt will justify it by saying he knew it would be a low-scoring defensive game and he was playing for field position....but I ultimately believe he made decisions out of fear of the Buffalo defense. IMO, it was the very definition of "playing not to lose".
OILERMAN
when was the score with 7 mins left? You seriously need to stop using flawed metrics to reinforce your point of view. Regardless of the exact metric that game was in the bag when the Titans were about to make it a 3 score game mid 4th quarter
TitanDuckFan
Quite honestly this game exposed the problem with having a dink and dunk offense. We held the ball for almost the entire 1st qt and essentially dominated the 1st half but didn't put points on the board. In reality we wouldn't have been up big time but certainly could have scored a TD or something. The punt on the opening drive is the baffling part for every Titans fan. WTF punts on the opponent's 36 yardline? If there was ever a time to call a zone-read run play on 4th and 2 that was the one. This QB is no stranger to 4th down run plays, or RPOs for that matter. And then they did the same thing with 3 minutes left in the half at the Indy 39. Again, 4th and 2. Why? Only Whiz knows.
luvyablue256
I hate blowing leads like they have but to even be up like that in a couple games to blow a lead is encouraging for this team. I kinda figured before the season started that there would be many games that they would lose by 7 points or less. That's just the way it is when you're a young team with a rookie QB that loses close games before it learns how to win. It's only promising when the mistakes are from the players and not the poor game management.

There were literally no defenders between the LOS and the first down marker. The Bills knew what was coming and totally schooled LeBeau on that play. Guest
Scine how did we go from "Whisenhunt is a genius" to this so quickly? Never mind, I forgot you're crazy.
Alcibiades
I'm super encouraged by the progress this team is showing, especially with how young we are at key positions. I see a really bright future ahead, and I don't want to switch coaches. We are getting close to being a very good team. That said, you can't give up 3rd and 23 with the other team against their own endzone. You just can't do that. Stop that play, and I think we win the game. Alcibiades
BTW, Seahawks collapsed today, too, up 24-7 at one point. Baltimore was way ahead of the Browns...blew it. We actually did NOT blow a big lead here, compared to other teams this weekend. However, we did give up a play where we should have finished the game. I still am having a lot more fun watching this year than I did last year, though. I feel like we are going to win every game. We don't, and that's to be expected, but we are always in it. There haven't been any games this year where I've thought "Well, we aren't even close to that team". Our defense is much improved. Our offense is still trying to find itself, but we have some promising players there, including a young QB who is limited this year, but with a ton of upside. So far from what I've seen the reason this team is 1-3 is due to 4-5 big plays the defense didn't stop, and one special teams breakdown. Total. But I believe if the playcalling yesterday had been different, 2 of those big plays wouldn't have mattered, and we'd be 2-2.
