Panther83
Which no one can ever define. It's the "he's a winner" argument with no actual explanation of how or why. The thing about it is...I have seen that team...in the national championship last season....defense was awful....Winston and company overcome that....I have seen them in low scoring games, when Winston struggled for 3 quarters, but in the clutch he comes through with a back breaking throw or run. Like titanium said...the next time he doesn't come thru will be his first time.

Like titanium said...the next time he doesn't come thru will be his first time. Not only that. In the ACC championship game against Ga Tech, he knew that his defense would have a hard time stopping the option attack of Ga Tech and he would have to score until the defense figured it out and came up with a stop. And that's what he did. The kid understands situations and moments in a game which can't be quantified. It doesn't mean it is not just as real. kyle021
Good post Merc. I think the best case scenario for the Titans is for the Bucs to take Winston as there is no way the organization takes another running QB. I agree I want nothing to do with either of these guys as QB IF Winston didn't have rape allegations last year, and understood how to be a mature young man then I would be all for drafting Winston, and trading Mett for a 2nd or 3rd rounder But that's not the case Mett is our future, and he already has command of the offense, and the locker room. He has the respect of the HC, and FO, and Owner. Let's give this kid a defense, an OL, and a RB to start building with, and hopefully he can win us 6-8 games next year, and reach the playoffs the following. Tim
Winston is a damn good NFL prospect. On the field, he will not let his team lose. His level of maturity off the field could make him a disaster. The titans wont take that risk.
XAEA12
LMBO...okay I'll bite. College stats of course. Accuracy: Winston has completed 66.2 percent of his passes in 533 pass attempts compared to Mettenberger who completed 61.8% of his 403 pass attempts. Winston YPA is 9.5 yds while Mettenberger's was 8.8. Winston has a higher completion percentage while pushing the ball further down the field. Accuracy goes to Winston. Good pocket awareness. Out of 533 pass attempts, Winston was sacked 42 times. So he was sacked 8% of the time he passed the ball. Mettenberger was sacked 53 times out of 403 dropbacks. That's 15% of the time that Mettenberger passes. Pocket awarness goes to Winston. Technique: Nothing to quantify that, so I will pass. Toughness: Winston has never missed a game because of injury. Mettenberger has had last two season end with season ending injury. Toughness goes to Winston. Leadership Ability: Winston has led his team to 2 ACC conference regularly season titles, 2 conference Championships, 1 National Championship and a berth is first college playoff (outcome pending). Perhaps Mettenmberger won a JUCU championship? Leadership goes to Winston. Arm: Both have strong arms. Really, it's not that hard. That was practically an annihilation. Guest
If you put aside Winston's off the field issues he's clearly a better prospect at QB than Mettenberger was this time last year and it's not even close.
Mercalius
I'm going to expand my thoughts on Winston a bit without trying to be long-winded. I hated the kid a year ago. I hated the kid two months ago. Once it started appearing obvious we could have a chance at drafting him, something happened in my opinion of him, and whether that's me being a bad person by slightly forgiving his transgressions because he can play football pretty well or me being a more rational person because of the opportunity he presents a franchise as a quarterback is something I can't honestly answer. After the rape accusation information started coming out, I wanted the kid suspended and not allowed anywhere near a football field again. After the shoplifting instance, I felt justified in my opinion of him and couldn't believe that, yet again, we had some sort of entitled, apparently retarded, diva QB prospect in college that didn't understand what he was doing to his longterm future by not shutting up, playing football, and eventually getting drafted. It seemed beyond comprehension that someone so talented wouldn't be smart enough to realize what was at stake or have anyone with their best interest in mind near enough to their ear to tell him to keep that shit in check. I fucking hate Auburn, but I rooted for them in the National Championship game last year because I hated Winston that much more. After the FSU win, I, with many on here, made fun of his "WE STRONG" speech likening him to another Vince Young in the making (not comparing football skills). He was easy to hate, and gave us haters endless amounts of ammunition to fire against him. Playing down to less-than-stellar competition this season didn't hurt anything either. Like I mentioned earlier, I don't think there was a single FSU game this season that I didn't watch and silently fistpump every time he threw an interception. Then this Titans season happened, and regardless of your views of Mettenberger, it was easy to see that we would be in the conversation for taking a quarterback. Whether we actually are or it's just a talking point from the media will be determined a few months from now, but we have to be honest that this chatter of Winston/Mariota to the Titans is only going to grow louder. So out of a mixture of boredom and curiosity I started looking into both players, both in game cutups and interviews off the field. To my complete surprise, there is a lot more to Jameis Winston than the stereotype I had in my head. Looking at him as a villain, it was easy to justify that viewpoint as the often-linked interviews/quotes/and off the field transgressions were easy to find. However, the harder to find, (ie less linked) interviews where he breaks down his offense, discusses gameplans, etc started to paint a much different picture of this kid. He seemed a lot smarter than I had given him credit for, and it was night and day how two videos of the same guy could paint him as a barely literate buffoon but the other could make him sound like he'd been in an NFL offense for a decade. Then I started doing more reading, and in the process, I've gone from outright hate to the kid to almost silently pulling for him to succeed. He gets football. That quote that Jonboy linked a week or so ago where the coach basically felated Winston's post-snap diagnoses on creative defensive schemes literally wow'd me. Then again, Pete Carroll was once quoted as saying Jake Locker was the best QB he'd ever coached against, so we can only take coach speak so far. Regardless, Winston was seeming to process things on the field at a level that few quarterbacks can, something I completely didn't think he was capable of doing. On top of that, he's 6"4 and built like a brick shithouse and it's easy to see why there's a lot to like about him from a purely football perspective, and why every other QB needy fanbase in the NFL is slobbering at the bits to be in the Titans spot right now. Are we right for wanting to pass on him, or trade him to another team? Or are they right, thinking he's the next real deal quarterback? Only one contingent will be right, but as a team that has lacked a franchise QB for a long time, it will suck heartily if we fuck this up either way. If we take him and he busts, it would set a struggling franchise back even further....and worse, if we pass on him in the hopes that Zach is the guy, Zach fails, and Winston proceeds to do at the pro level what he did in college....I think many in this fanbase might off themselves. It's a tough situation, but something we have to trust the FO on (even though they don't deserve that trust, to be honest). Jameis Winston is an immensely talented yet flawed quarterback prospect, but for once, most of those faults don't come from anything that's happening in a football game. It's a doozy, honestly. MamlngEnvy
I think I'm gonna be hoping for Winston. The bills really made this decision for me..great d very good we decent really good run game. No qb. They miss playoffs. Obviously qb is worth more than everything else combined...I'd take like three qbs this draft and whoever looks best outta them and mett get the start. Not Cuz I think mett is gonna suck or anything...jus Cuz he didn't show to be the franchise qb y'all promised...plus he gets hurt at a Jake locker like rate. Please...prove where I'm anti mettenberger? On another titans board I'm seen as too pro mett lol. I've said he gets hurt and it reminds me too much of the recent past...is that unreasonable? No. He has the exact same injury rate as Jake...a stat I wouldn't know if it wasn't for a page long breakdown of how often jake gets injured, a "staggering, mind boggling 33%" well mett is right there with that..I've said many times my ideal outcome is not spending a top two pick on a qb with the vy wound barely scarring over but a fresh Jake locker wound right next to it...I don't want nor can the franchise withstand another bust at qb. But what would be even worse is passing on a franchise qb and watching him lead another team for a decade if mett doesn't turn into a great qb. Also when will you stop pretending all your posts aren't meant to read as a transcript of you sucking his cock
Righteous
Not really that hard is you want meaningless comparisons. Winston might not be worth a bag of dog food in the NFL. What we do know is Winston threw 4 picks against Florida and only completed 50% of his passes. That is concerning. Bortles had a better % rate than Winston (67.8) or Mett and a comparable average to Winston's (9.4). Bortles was sack 21 times in 382 pass attempts. He also has a strong arm. Just shows how meaningless these kind of comparisons can be since Mett might be a better NFL prospect at this point. Winston could end up like Borltes and play like he did against Florida for all we know. And so could Mettenberger. Unlike some, I have no idea what the future holds. The thread was a comparison between Mettenberger and Winston. However, Bortles was picked way before Mettenberger because his play (including stats) indicated that he was a better prospect. Winston's stats and play indicates that he is a better prospect than Mettenberger. Let's stay on topic. Only when you guy is at the bottom does performance base statistics become meaningless. I bet you were all for the team drafting Chris Henry, huh?
