Cyrus
The problem is that off-field issues do matter and doubly so for a quarterback. I never thought Winston was a dummy - in fact you can easily watch any interview and see that he's a bright guy. However the sheer immaturity off the field is a huge problem. You cannot gloss over some of these things. They not only show a severe lack of judgment but also a severe lack of character. Not only that, but he's essentially gotten off the hook for all of them. What Mettenberger did as a freshman was significantly less offensive and damaging to the victim and he essentially had to start over and virtually had his future taken away. Winston was protected by the institutions in power because he won a national championship and a Heisman. If he wasn't so productive he would already be out the door and begging Division II teams for an opportunity. So is that the guy you want to be your quarterback? Your leader? I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a chance, but there's no way I'm drafting this guy Top 5. You have to be ready and willing to get rid of him if he makes another mistake. Tie him to high first round pick and you'll feel bound to him not because of who he is, but because you don't want to admit you made a stupid mistake drafting him. Cyrus
Games in which Winston threw more TDs than INTs: Citadel, North Carolina State, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech Games in which Winston threw more INTs than TDs: Oklahoma State, Virginia, Florida He also a 3 TD 3 INT game against Louisville. Ultimately he had 24 TDs and 17 INTs on the season. Also rape allegations and numerous off-field issues. But then again, he is a Heisman winning quarterback, just like these other quarterbacks: Marcus Mariota, Johnny Manziel, Robert Griffin III, Cam Newton, Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, Troy Smith, Matt Leinart, Jason White, Carson Palmer, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke and Danny Wuerffel. Stranger
The odds of a QB being successful in the NFL, despite their collegiate success, is already low. Add into that his off field concerns, and you're really playing with fire by drafting Winston that early. If he's there at 33, sure, take a chance, but at 2, no way. It seems as though some here are willing to risk setting the team back even further, and overlooking any off field issues he may have because he's had success at the college level. kgsTitan
No GM looks at stats or even W-L record when trying to determine whether a QB is a top NFL prospect. They only want to know if the guy can make every throw with accuracy and anticipation, handle literal and figurative pressure, run an NFL playbook, and avoid back-breaking mistakes. Righteous
My God man are you trying for the blue ribbon of stupid award? I am staying on topic. I proved the stat game can be meaningless. And what the duck does Chris Henry have to do with anything. The point is we HAVE Mettenberger (who had pretty good college stats and has shown something in real NFL games) and don't need to use a #2 pick in the draft on him. Oh did you miss where I pointed out Winston was 50% and 4 ints against Florida. How about them stats genius. What is it genius? Does stats matter or not, because you seem to allude to Winston stats for one game to prove some stupid point? Let's be clear, you must be the only idiot watching football who doesn't believe that stats matter and is not an indication of a players ability. It may not be the only indication but it certainly is an indication. Mettenberger has shown that he can lose games...he has zero wins in the NFL. Less than Bortles. Oh, that's a meaningless stat too? So what should we hang our hat on that Mettenberger can lead this team in the future? I'll wait for your response?

But that is something that I am sure will be overlooked.

Mercalius
The odds of a QB being successful in the NFL, despite their collegiate success, is already low. Add into that his off field concerns, and you're really playing with fire by drafting Winston that early. If he's there at 33, sure, take a chance, but at 2, no way. It seems as though some here are willing to risk setting the team back even further, and overlooking any off field issues he may have because he's had success at the college level. I don't think that's what's happening, necessarily. (At least for some of us). Personally, I look at it this way. I think he's probably the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck in terms of purely playing the position. A lot of other folks think that as well. What he does at the next level will always be a question mark until it happens, but Luck was the most sure-fire prospect of this generation. There's a big gap between where Luck was and the rest of the 1st rounders since him, but Winston is a lot closer to the good end of that spectrum than the bad. If the front office see shades of that ability to come into the league and put a team on his back, leading them to wins in impressive fashion even if the stat sheet might not always support it, you have to give it serious consideration. You have to weigh the risk of him doing something retarded and self-destructive versus him being able to transform an organization overnight. It's not easy to do, as prospects like that don't come around every year, but if he goes on a tear during the college playoffs and plays lights out football it will be hard not to get a little caught up in the hype. If he was squeaky clean off the field, we'd probably be rioting that Tampa blatantly threw the game yesterday as he'd be the no brainer for 1st overall. As it stands now, he still may end up going 1st, but he may not, and sadly - he is what he is at this point: An immature kid with a looming stigma that could make a lot of people look stupid for trusting him but can play football better than almost anyone else in the country. If he keeps his nose clean the franchise very likely (as likely as drafting a QB can get) hits a homerun, and if not, a lot of people get fired. It's always a risk in the draft, but this one's unique for a few reasons. Just glad I'm not paid to make the decisions.
IsntLifeFunny
If I'm being truthful, I believe Winston has a higher ceiling. I don't know by how much, and it may only be by a few degrees, because Mett has a top 3 arm and a lot of poise, but Winston is a really good QB. He is nowhere the prospect of Luck, but he is damn good. I think it would be a mistake to take him at 2. He's already been entitled his whole football career, and picking him at 2 would cement that he is untouchable, at least in his own mind in my opinion. I was surprised by how well he spoke in some interviews after watching him speak live the other day. It only reinforced my notion that he is immature and panders to whatever crowd he is around. How does a smart person get suspended by his team for getting on top of a table and yelling the knockout song?...after rape allegations, autograph allegations, point shaving allegations, and being caught stealing? The answer to that question should lead everyone to the right answer about whether he's mature enough to be handed the status of a top 2 pick. With that said, if we do pick him I could see him being a beast if he keeps his nose clean.
