Modern manufacturing requires maybe ~20% of the people compared to 50-80 years ago. It is visually apparent, as the plants I visit from the 1950s or earlier have massive soccer field-sized parking lots (often some have been let go back to grass) due to the historical personnel levels required. With that said, the jobs left are relatively higher skill and pay well. The ecosystem that grows around these manufacturing jobs also pays well (machines shops, industrial services, etc). We were in the midst of the biggest industrial investment campaign in history (~10x the prior 20 years' rate), which I think will now be in doubt with the current chaos and uncertainty.
