Good material from the books largely made it easier to write the show. And it was easier to keep to a TV schedule because that material already existed and only had to be adapted. D&D didn't need to think it all up on their own, just modify GRRM's story. And yes, there were tons of complaints about too much rape a couple of years back. But that went away pretty quickly once they started burning children to death... @oldschool It sounds like he already basically said this..? OMAN has some magic power of saying basically the same things as other people but gets everyone to agree with him. Seems to me that the main disagreement is over what words we use to describe the loss of quality. Is it so bad we should be "approaching panic mode?" Is it merely "good instead of great?" Has it been reduced to something "a good bit stronger than, but akin to, a whimper?" Is it no longer "the best years" of the show? To be fair, one could approach panic mode even if they were worried about a good but not great ending. Jamalisms
Importance of the loss of quality is probably not the key. Degree is part of that.
pat
It's pretty obvious why the quality dropped, the books are good source material. Once Benioff and Weis got over their skis the quality started dropping. It started showing last year, but Ramsey was still a great villain leading the noise and thunder of the Battle of the Bastards. These TV people can't create a villain like Ramsey, Euron's leering rapes are a pathetic attempt at carrying the torch. The show is over. Let's at least try to have some fun on the way out. Starkiller
The show is still good, just not as good. The main problem is that they only have a limited time to wrap up the series. They know how it ends and I'm sure GRRM told them basically how things will go (as far as he knows himself). But he has years (and years) to finish the story while D&D are rushed by TV schedules, have a limited amount of screen time, and have a limited budget (that book writers never have to deal with) despite the fact that these may be the most effects laden episodes of the entire series. I understand complaints about stupid plans to capture a wight that drove the last episode (which I still enjoyed). I don't have any problem with that and I tend to even agree. But I get tired of the nitpicky complaints. Ravens don't fly that fast. Rivers shouldn't be that deep. Blah blah blah. I just don't care. It's not important enough to the scope of the story for me to get upset about. MadMax
NashvilleNinja
Quick thought... it's said that the army of the dead are mindless drones/clones enthralled to the Night King, but when the magnificient 7 corner the one wight and hold it down it screeches out to alert the others. Seems to me that there is at least some low-level intelligence and individuality (or is it community?) within all the wights. To what end who knows, but the thought occured to me a moment ago while watching that scene again. Edited August 26, 2017 by NashvilleNinja

When the Hound kicked the kidnapped wight all of the other wights surrounding them reacted. The wight who the Hound hit with a rock reacted, and kind of independently started walking towards the island.
Starkiller
Also, no one has brought this up but the group was fighting with dragonglass weapons. Obviously Jon had Valyrian steel and Thoros and Berick had flaming swords, but others had obsidian weapons. Jorah had obsidian daggers. Tormund had an obsidian axe. They seemed effective against the wights.

Starkiller
Not sure what the Hound had offhand. I think just a sword during the bear attack. Not sure after he dropped Gendry's hammer on the lake. *edit: he had obsidian, too
NashvilleNinja
Btw... since it's fantasy football season, what are some of the better GOT-themed fantasy team names you've come up with or seen? Couple that I've seen are... Valyrian Steelers Riverrun (through ya mf face) A Team Has No Name Edited August 27, 2017 by NashvilleNinja CreepingDeath, and StephenIsLegend
Jamalisms
They mostly started with steel and switched to obsidian without calling attention to it. Which was mildly confusing.

One year I had Drogo's Bloodriders, Reed's Craggnomen, and probably a few others I can't remember. Don't think any were clever enough to include a football reference.
