Well for anyone who cares to read this, here are my (lengthy) thoughts now that I’ve had a chance to sleep on it.   I’ll start by saying I'm not sure I've ever been more hyped for an episode

I loved the fact that Theon won his fight cause he has no dick. Haha

Just most obnoxious writer I have ever read, he paints a fine picture and can build a world but it's just to the point and beyond of being unbearable. A lot of what he says adds nothing of value and feels like he's a 2nd grader who is writing a 2,000 word essay.

How far did you get in the book series?

Just one book in, I just didn't find it anywhere near enjoyable where I would prefer to watch the show if I were to immerse myself in the world he's created.

I like fantasy enough where the episodes I do watch I really enjoy, just have never been fanatical about it... I've only seen episodes with other people compared to me creating a chunk of time to watch

I was exposed to it through a work book club.  One coworker laughed at the ending (dragons) and didn't sound like he really cared for it.  Personally, I was into it once I wrapped my head around all the names of the characters (and nicknames).  I've read many criticisms of Martin's writing - but most of it is aimed at the two completed novels after a Storm of Swords.  On the other hand, I've also read other renowned writers give acclaim.  Sometimes its just personal preference.  (and timing)

For sure, I've heard many well known people praise his writing. It's just not for me... I don't need 10 words describing the exact same thing to create imagery.

A lot of what I've read is that a lot of the ridiculous verbosity is there for foreshadowing, especially because he does it A LOT with colors. But it's just not for me. I've always said, he's a great world builder and character developer, but crosses that fine line of being the total package for my preferences where the books are too much of a frustration compared to the simple enjoyment that fantasy should be built on.

I get it.  One of the criticized books (#4 - Feast for Crows) has Brienne wandering the countryside looking for a Stark girl.  Many readers complained that the whole thing was pointless, long and didn't contribute to the story at large.  On the other hand, I enjoyed it for a few reasons.

1)  It was another example of turning tropes on their head (Like Ned's death)... Briene's quest was not only not a success, but it was fruitless in almost every regard.  It is argued that Martin included it to also shine a light on the plight of the commoners during all of these wars.

2)  Martin continued to introduce characters in his usual verbosity (as he has already trained his readers to pay attention as main characters can have "tells") in these chapters when they are quickly dispatched or left behind.  In this instance, I didn't feel pissed off at my time being wasted.  It was more like a good magician's trick.  I was more "I'm on to you, Martin" and kept turning the pages.

They were harder to read the first time but books 4 and 5 are the better rereads, tbh. They're a slog at times but there's more depth there and the resolution hasn't yet occurred. It's like a masterful setting up of a chess board.

Brienne going off in search of Sansa with a magical sword and, instead of finding her, finding nothing except other people looking and beginning a witness to the real devastation from war ... while the details actually show you (if you're paying attention) what the resistance is up to ... is a fascinating bit of pragmatism.

I'm not saying he's not incredibly talented even, but in a genre like this I (and many others) would rather be playing checkers. Even though obviously many many people are down for chess.

The analogy I'd rather use is that he is one of those guys you see videos of where they just let the board play out only to sweep their opponent once they drag the game out and lay all the pieces out to their liking, slightly different imo of what you meant by setting up the board. Doesn't make the end result any different but adds a hell of a lot more frustration in the meantime for what I perceive to not be an outcome that is worth the effort.

Except in this case I don't think he is "playing" anyone, I just think he drags the game on a bit too long.

Vegas Odds on who will end up sitting on the thrown at the end:

Bran Stark surprise favorite based on some fans theories

There’s a couple of prevailing theories about the relationship between Bran and the Night King. One believes that they are one and the same. That Bran’s ability to warg either has him become the Night King at times or that he traveled back in time to become the Night King in some sort of LOST timeline play.

Another theory, which is much deeper in scope, pits Bran and the Night King as representatives of religion, of good and evil essentially, and they will eventually clash in the final battle for Westeros – which will be much bigger than any Starks, Lannisters, Targaryens or dragons.

Based on prophecy, I can’t see her being queen at the end much less surviving. But then the show didn’t air the same prophecy as the books.

Maybe she’ll be dead but still on the throne
