Hackman plays the bigot partner and he makes him sort of likable in the end Target: kind of a Cold War thriller w/Matt Dillion. Mentioned it because both actors seemed to be starring in different films 90s Narrow Margin: not sure where this one ranks but it’s a personal fave . The Quick and the dead ; he’s basically rehashing the Little Bill character but less evil. The best thing I’ve read about Hackman is that he made difficult men a little more understandable. You didn’t automatically think he was a one note or one dimensional character. I mean he’s functioning as the mayor there and punishing the three guys that defaced that prostitute. It’s just that the women paid for the bounty/hit and well chaos ensued. It’s pretty an anti western in terms of the hero William Munny. He’s basically a drunken POS, an awful human being , no where close to the heros of traditional westerns . Honestly the Richard Harris character might be the biggest POS in that movie because he’s a coward and liar. Probably not the best or most famous Hackman film, but I’ve ending up watching No Way Out a few times and it’s creeped up on me as a personal fav. Little Bill didn't punish the two guys. He's going to give the horses to the bar owner then just tells the hookers he whipped them. He also beat Ned to death. He may not be the bad guy, but he ain't the good guy either. He also didn't give out fair justice and it got him killed. Frances Fisher role as one of the outraged whores in that film is one of my faves. I always get a kick out of how Eastwood rises up and becomes a totally different person after he drinks alcohol. It’s funny how they are so damn dysfunctional. They literally hate his guts and he’s pretty much a lying sack of shit for most of the movie. That was a good year for Hackman , he also did Heist. (Warning; long post on Unforgiven follows) Anyway, you’re right . Honestly, if he gave fair justice all the way in the beginning of the film after the whore got cut up , none of this would have happened. And in the end he did “deserve” it. This is also a truth and fiction film or myth vs reality (of cowboys/killers old west). There are way too many bullshiters in this film. The worst is probably the kid. The way that Little Bill just basically tore apart the myth of English Bob killing that guy was ace. At the end of that you can see the Saul Rubinek character “oh shit I’ve been following and listening to the wrong guy”. The appeal of Little Bill is this : he’s a no nonsense tell it like it is type . In truth, he probably is closest to the traditional “good guy” in the western. The William Munny character is interesting is that he seems to almost be ashamed of all his deeds of the past and tries to downplay them as opposed to the others in this film who can’t wait to brag how great they were. It’s almost as if he seeks/sought repentance for all those horrible things he did. The only reason we got a glimpse of the real William Munny is because of the honor amongst thieves ethos. The ending sequence where he goes into the saloon and he doesn’t say much and he just looks at the people in the saloon is great stuff. And it’s dark, rainy and there’s like a fire outside and it’s basically hell on earth and the Devil is back. Last point : this is a great score.
