wiscotitansfan
One thing I was astonished by is that there are a dozen-ish states that allow you to drink in a car if you are not the driver (my friends and I made a point to crack open beers crossing Tennessee state line going to the Packers Titans game years ago). Even Wisconsin doesn’t have that What made me think of this topic was buying a “to go” beer at the airport today that I could just drink in the concourse after security. What are some drinking laws you are surprised by or think may be some local anomalies.
IsntLifeFunny
I got a good one. We have a small city outside of Nashville called Nolensville. I used to bartend out there. They had one of the strangest drinking laws I've ever seen. Bars could stay open until 2 AM but after 10 or 11 pm you could no longer sell beer that wasn't high gravity. It was either high gravity or liquor and that's it. I was like wait, are you trying to get people more fucked up before they drive? Indeed I think they were using it to get DUI tickets and payments. IDK about Nolensville but Davidson Co. had a Beer Board (Fair Board too.... had a Grand Uncle bit like Boss Hog sat on those back in the day) that dictated some beer laws, and liquor - anything 5%+ - was from them. So yeah you'd see once rule for most beer and another for wine/booze/etc. Like couldn't serve Bud at a table near the bar at Applebee's with a minor there but shots of tequila? !Ole! No clue where stands now but realized along the way in the 80s/90s how random and BS the regulations were. Comically ridiculous.
IrishTitansFan
The dumbest drinking law in the US is having to be 21 to buy alcohol
IrishTitansFan
In Ireland there are a couple of annoying laws - Happy hours are against the law. You can't reduce drink prices for set times -Recently they brought in minimum unit pricing, a minimum of 10 cent per gram of alcohol sold. This meant multipacks of beer in some cases went from like €5 for 6 to 8/9/10 minimum. Cheap wine almost doubled in some cases. This was to stop cheap alcohol being so easily available. It has not stopped people drinking yet and you are fighting a losing cause in Ireland. What it has done is punish the non-wealthy

Jamalisms
It's say the laws that are lenient with DUIs are some of the stranger laws ... but I'm quite biased.
nine
You can’t make this stuff up, folks: In Tennessee, Republican lawmakers sponsor a bill to ban the sale of refrigerated beer. https://www.wkrn.com/news/tennessee-news/bill-would-ban-sale-of-cold-beer-in-tennessee/amp/

Strunk'sDessert
Stupid proposal of course, but I'd love to hear these two lawmakers opinions about gun shows - ease of access, ya know?

It's simply amazing how fucking stupid these people are to the point it's hard to even understand their motivations.

titanruss
The guy who is pushing the bill got hit by a drunk driver. There's other stuff in the bill like increasing the punishment for DUIs if the BAC is over .15 rather than .2 Hopefully the law doesnt pass but I assume most of it is for posturing and it will pass with several of the things taken out - like gas station cold beers. Half the stores in the state would go out of business - well not half but a lot. On the other hand, refrigerator sales would go through the roof! wiscotitansfan
I don’t understand the cold beer logic… that drivers leave the store and are too anxious to have a drink and if they need to go home to put it in the fridge first it will stop drinking while driving?
