Ireland's two main political parties are centre-right but would be firmly on the left in the US

Now outside actors from the UK/US are stirring up people here and the far right is growing, they consider the government way too liberal, but they're still a very big minority

The Ireland PMs hero is Reagan!

Reagan would have been cast off from the party. He spoke of empathy towards immigrants and how the US was the shining city on the hill. Republicans now openly state how the US is a failed nation and that it's democrats and immigrants fault (really an amalgamation of anyone that isn't white, Christian, or conservative).

I'm not saying that is all conservatives POV, but the venn diagram overlaps most of them.

Pure nonsense.  Byrd, Gore and Fulbright were liberal Democrats to name a few.   In fact the more Republican the South has become, the less racist.

“Libertarian”   LOL you fucking suckers

They're 100% centrists at the least by international standards

Had the privilege last summer to spend 2 weeks in Ireland & Scotland with my wife.

It was funny how many taxi drivers and folks in the pubs said they were rooting for Trump because of the same zeitgeist here, people are just fed up.

But if we ever mentioned we were from Tennessee, 1st they asked about country music and 2nd they felt out if we were one of the hard right nutjobs.

Purely anecdotal, but it happened enough for me and my wife to both take note.

Also, I have more in common with the standoff-ish Scots personality wise. But the folks from Dublin to Galway to Belfast and every town in between reminded me so much of what Tennessee was like 20 years ago. Besides the weather, it felt I hopped into a time machine of the good old days.

I forgot how fake redneck and east/west coast Nashville and the state has gotten.

I'm not going down the rabbit hole, but to pretend like the far-left doesn't have ideas they want to impose on the rest of the country

The far left is not setting policy or even being heard. They are magnified by Republicans and Trumper to play what aboutism....Biden is a moderate and so is the party decision makers. They stomped out Bernie when he was winning.

The Republican base is far right and they are 100% the core of the party.

It's not remotely the same

Yeah it's the name recognition and memes, honestly

Almost anyone who pays attention to US politics here hates Trump, including the centrists and centre-right supporters of the gov

It really isn't though. The US has hit record highs in oil production today. Doesn't sound like green climate changers are running the show. We are actively supporting Israel in the fight against Hamas. Doesn't sound like the Squad is running the show. We have spent almost 100 billion in funds and weaponry to Ukraine fighting a foreign war against Russia. That's some Reagan shit right there...Doesn't sound like the hippies are running that show.

I haven't seen the administration try to pass Universal Healthcare. So no outright socialism on that front. They're fighting a rear guard battle to just keep Obamacare off limits.

I guess what I'm saying is if you want to compare the two and come to the conclusion they're close to equal I would like to see your rationalization for it. I do not see it as being close whatsoever. I say this as someone who used to be independent of either party and have voted for 2 libertarians for president.

Oil production is up because drilling efficiency has improved. Day one Biden shut down keystone and re-entered the Paris Agreement. They can't pass universal healthcare because the Supreme Court would immediately strike it down and they know it.

So how is the left similar to the right? One side has allowed the extremists to run the show. The other has some fringe elements but is actually conservative by global standards. I'm genuinely asking here and not trying to be a dick.

The Democrats are not conservative by any standard. That's a myth.

There are plenty of conservative Dems, like Manchin and Tester. The party runs the gamut from traditional conservative to liberal.

But by European standards the Dems are the Conservative Party and the Lib Dems smooshed together. Meanwhile the GOP is the far-right nuts.
