He can’t end his campaign. His entire legal strategy of avoiding justice involves becoming president again (though there’s a good chance another Republican president would just pardon him on any federal charges).

Former Texas Rep. Will Hurd on Thursday launched a bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, joining a crowded field looking to challenge front-runner former President Donald Trump.

Hurd has been outspoken in his criticism of Trump following the former president’s indictment and arrest on federal charges over his alleged mishandling of classified documents.

good long article on Trump’s war on truth, and how his purposeful active purveyance of misinformation / disinformation unquestionably threatens our society.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The cherry tree folklore is too good to be true, but it’s no lie that George Washington had a thing for the truth. “I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is the best policy,” he wrote in his farewell address.

A few decades later, another future president’s reputation for veracity earned him a well known nickname: Honest Abe Lincoln.

Then there’s Donald Trump, who during his presidency faced questions about business dealings in Moscow. “I have nothing to do with Russia,” he said in 2016. He switched stories when the facts of his decades-long effort to build a luxury tower there emerged. “Everybody” had always known about the project, according to Trump, who suggested only a sucker would drop such a proposal just because they wanted to serve their country as president.

“Why should I lose lots of opportunities?” Trump said….

Hurd strikes me as the type of candidate the GOP desperately needs in order to right the ship and put the party back on course.

It’s pretty rare that I agree with a Republican candidate’s views, particularly in recent years.   But reading over Hurd’s positions on a number of issues, he strikes me as a candidate I could absolutely get on board with.

(I also find it very refreshing to see a GOP candidate who’s actually focusing on policy instead of pandering to the lowest common denominator).

Until the foul stench is wiped away, which will take at least a generation, I could nevereconsider voting Reoublican. As someone who voted for Ron Paul I don't enjoy having that stance, but it simply is what it is.

Hurd is more in the mold of a traditional Republican. He is out of step with the current rabid base. I’m not really sure even he thinks he can win. Maybe he’s hoping the party abandons both Trump and the fascist “anti-woke” ideology overnight and sees reason, but that seems far fetched.

But maybe he entered to build himself name recognition. You see all these nobodies running for president nowadays getting some national attention. I could see doing that if he wanted to build up his brand before running for governor or senator in 2026.

I think a lot of these candidates are banking on Trump not even being in the primary, which I think is a legit possibility

And Trump is banking on the court proceedings dragging out long enough for him to be elected so he can pardon himself 30 seconds after being inaugurated .

At the very least, they may be banking on a swing away from him based on his legal troubles and now seeing DeSantis' weakness.

Those guys are polling so low he'd have to be completely out of the race for it to matter

Essentially one of the non-Trump candidates would need to gain momentum and get all of the anti-Trump support.

Everyone thought it was going to be DeSantis to be the main challenger, but it’s not looking that way. At this point, it’s more likely he keeps anyone else to gaining enough strength to challenge Trump.

Former President Donald Trump jacked up threats Monday that he will skip at least the first Republican debate, complaining that one of the sponsors, Fox News, has ignored his recent campaign events.

Fox did not broadcast Trump's weekend speeches in Washington, D.C., and Michigan and "then wants me to show up and get them ratings for their 'Presidential' Debate, where I’m leading the field by 40 points," Trump said on Truth Social.

"Sorry FoxNews, life doesn’t work that way!!!" the former president added.

Trump made his latest threat as a rising number of Republicans are trying to pressure him into participating in the debates, starting with an August event in Milwaukee.

Yikes.  I'm fairly sure this will change as people get ready to vote next year and actually take stock of the candidates.  That said, polling results like this should send everyone into urgency mode -- another Trump presidency would do serious damage to truth itself.

Former President Trump took a 3-point lead over President Biden in a hypothetical head-to-head match-up ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

In a Morning Consult poll published Tuesday, 44 percent of respondents said they’ll cast their support for Trump, while 41 percent of those said they would choose Biden.

‘He’s the cheapest S.O.B. I’ve ever met’: Christie rips Trump for diverting campaign money to PAC

Trump is “the cheapest S.O.B. I’ve ever met in my life,” Christie told POLITICO on Tuesday evening. “What Donald Trump is good at is spending other people’s money.” The former president began diverting a larger share of his political donations to his Save America PAC in February or March, The New York Times reported on Sunday, and may have already redirected at least $1.5 million.

“This is a billionaire who refused to pay his lawyers with his own personal money, and instead, men and women out there who believe in him and wanted [him] to be elected president are donating money to try to forward his candidacy … and he’s diverting that money to pay his own legal fees,” Christie said.

“He should take a pledge today to instruct his campaign to no longer spend any public money on his legal fees,” Christie added. “He is the richest candidate in this race, yet he is using public money to pay his legal fees. He should be ashamed of himself.”
