The Russian government detained a U.S. soldier last week on charges of theft, according to two U.S. officials.

The soldier, a staff sergeant who is stationed in South Korea, was arrested last Thursday, said one of the officials, who was granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive incident. The soldier had traveled to Russia to meet a woman, possibly his girlfriend, the official said.

The State Department is in touch with the Russian government about the case, the official said, adding that the soldier has been given a pretrial detention until July 1.

U.S. Made Threat to Strike Russian Troops

May 25, 2024 at 3:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 106 Comments

“Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in an interview published on May 25 that the U.S. has told Russia that if it uses nuclear weapons, there will be an American response using conventional weapons on Russian forces in Ukraine,” the Kyiv Independent reports.

Said Sikorsky: “The Americans have told the Russians that if you explode a nuke, even if it doesn’t kill anybody, we will hit all your targets in Ukraine with conventional weapons, we’ll destroy all of them.”

Belgium’s pledge on Tuesday to send the first batch of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine this year comes with a clear warning to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy: Don’t fly them in Russian territory.

Ukraine and Belgium have signed a security agreement which includes the delivery of 30 U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets, in a move to bolster Kyiv's defense capabilities against Russian President Vladimir Putin's ongoing invasion.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the first €1.5 billion ($1.6 billion) in revenue from frozen Russian assets will be transferred to Ukraine as early as July, in line with international law and while ensuring financial market stability.

The West holds around $300 billion of Russian central bank assets frozen worldwide, with most of them being in the European Union. The discussions on using this money for Ukrainian aid and reconstruction are ongoing.

Speaking at the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024 in Berlin on 11 June, Ursula von der Leyen stated that 90% of the funds will be allocated to defense, while the remaining 10% will be directed towards reconstruction efforts in Ukraine.

I read this was an option and think it's a good one. Since the banks own that money it will of course come as a loan, but they need any injection of liquid they can get and I'm sure eventually it will be forgiven.
