The recent Russian cannon fodder attacks around Andriivka have to be demoralizing as their losses have been as bad as at any point in the war. This time however, it’s not just waves of prisoners or Wagner mercenaries — it’s the conscripts getting chewed up with very little hope of achieving the short term objectives. Just brutal.

Those conscripts are primarily from the non-ethnic Russian territories. Putin has been careful to avoid sending a lot of folks from the Moscow and St. Petersburg areas into the meat grinder.

Yeah, Putin doesn't care about these people. Moral is low at the front but it has been for a while.

Essentially Russia thought they could do the same thing w/ Avvdivka as they did w/ Bakhmut and just send waves of troops to incrementally gain territory and surround the city to cut it off of supplies. But this isn't Bakhmut.

Wagner was being pretty soundly kicked around too. I think they're overrated especially the cannon fodder they had in Ukraine.

Bakhmut just wasn't as important or as heavily defended as Avdiivka. That city has held out right on the frontline for the whole war iirc. It's heavily fortified and defended and they're not trying to strategically retreat as they were in Bakhmut as they tried to make Russia bleed. In Avdiivka, they're actually trying to keep it. Ukraine didn't really care about Bakhmut from a strategic sense.
