"MT: What about reports that the Colts are considering signing Byron Leftwich to mentor Luck?"

"MOORE: Andrew Luck doesn’t need a mentor. I’ve never bought into the theory that you learn by watching. I think all that stuff is really overrated. Is he going to make mistakes? Yeah, who hasn’t?"

So, yeah, start Locker...

All the rules are totally set up for the passing game and there is basically no off season any more. These guys have tons of mini camps and QB schools. There is absolutely no reason to "groom" young QBs. Look at Dalton and Newton last year during a strike off season, they were fine. Newton started the season with two 400yd games. Locker had a 100 passer rating.

The only thing worse than sitting a highly drafted rookie QB is going into his 2nd season in an open QB battle against a washed up has been.

There was an offseason last year, so it made sense to sit him. I agree that there is no excuse this year. Locker should start. But he does need to earn the job. That's only fair to Hasselbeck, and I think having him win the job will be better for Locker too.

Exactly...what is the point of competition if you are just going to hand players a job? I want Locker to start, I can't wait...but make him earn it! Every position should be a competition, that is how players get better. He should have to take the job from Hass on the field, not in the off season.

Any fool knows you learn by doing, so yeah, let him play and learn. We always have MH to be there if he falters. win-win situation.

any fool knows you can learn plenty by studying and watching someone who is an expert.

hell, I've learned a whole hell of a lot about crossfit by watching vids on technique.

A guy came up to me yesterday after a WOD and told me he learned how to do a butterfly kip by watching me.

Why is this even a question anymore? Locker already sat for a full year.

Not that I disagree, but Tom Moore had Peyton Manning. Not every young QB is Peyton. Plus what really makes him especially qualified to comment on this?

He made his share of mistakes but his work ethic overshadowed any negatives from starting him day one. Not all QBs would fit that description. I felt like Locker did enough in relief last year to get the nod over Hass, especially later in the season. The one positive is that they may learn more about defensive schemes etc while not having to take a pounding like Locker got in the Saints game because he missed a line call. Sooner than later you might as well take the training wheels off.

When you draft a QB in the first round you are handing him the job

LOL, Tom Moore had Peyton Manning who was the most prepared QB to ever come into the NFL. I'm fine with starting a rookie. But a guy like Jake Locker was pretty raw and didn't have a lot of experience as a pro style QB in college and they made the correct decision to sit him last year. Jeeze Tom Moore would have been out of the NFL years ago if it weren't for manning anyway.

Anyone think Rogers would be the player he is today if he didnt sit behind Favre watch and learn how to prepare and become the QB he is today?

I think he would be great regardless but I def think it helped sitting behind Favre.

I don't know if he would've been great if he hadn't sat for a few years... not necessarily b/c he learned a lot from watching or not... i have no clue if it did even though I think it can help. But b/c he needed the time to work on his craft w/ NFL coaches. if he had started as a rookie, he wouldn't have been ready and he would've looked bad early which means GB possibly would've given up on him before he got ready... and then he probably wouldn't get another chance.
