They've been doing it even longer than NE and without the controversies. Duncan might be the least controversial superstar ever. Duncan was never on a losing team. With the exception of a few shortened seasons, Duncan never won fewer than 50 games. Made the playoffs every single season. 5 championships and was generally always a pretty consistent performer like you say for the most part. Didn't always lead his team in scoring, especially in the latter years, but didn't have to. He could impact the game in a bunch of different ways beyond putting points on the board. They've been my one consistent bright spot in all of sports (since the Titans surely haven't been.) I knew this was coming and even hearing it today, it still bummed me out. He's going to be missed. Did you realize that they've only missed the playoffs once since 1990 (year they won the Duncan lottery)? He literally played till the wheels fell off. Not many people know this but he's been playing with one good knee since 2000. Well that knee got injured in January and forced this retirement. It's a shame the Spurs wasted a really good Duncan performance in the Clippers playoff series last year. Parker and Ginobili should be gone in the next two years. smokeater Posted July 12, 2016 Author Report Share Posted July 12, 2016 I think it was the things he did on defense that were probably more important than what he did on the offensive end. He just disrupted an offense and his teammates would funnel offensive players down to him. Duncan wasn't drafted until 1997. You're thinking of David Robinson, who was drafted in 89. Duncan was a great player, and I'm sure he learned a lot about how to accomplish that from Robinson. People tend to forget all about Robinson for some reason. He was there for the first six years of Duncan's career and Duncan's first two championship wins. He was there for the first six years of Duncan's career and Duncan's first two championship wins. Yeah it was Robinson. Robinson got saddled with some really shitty teams in the 90s. OK, they were lotto bad type teams but the some of the starting backcourts for those early 90s Spurs teams were pretty poor.
