On one hand I appreciate a coach being so honest & open about how he feels things went, but on the flip side the guy also hasn't once mentioned something he felt he could've done better, and that pisses me off. There's a few situations he could've approached better, none being as significant as his handling of AH. Now, we all know Al is an unrepentant douchebag. But he also happened to be at the time the highest paid & most destructive defensive player in the NFL. So why, for the love of Christ, was Shanny insisting he play 2 gap NT? That was just a complete waste of one of the most unique, special talents in the history of the game, and it speaks to how petty & controlling he can be at times. Id be interested in @oldschool take on how Shanny handled AH.... Shanahan's nickname "The Rat" is not only about his physical appearance. I'm a huge fan of the Shanahan offense. But Mike Shanahan the person, is just as bad or worse than RGIII. You never hear him say his role in damaging that kid's knee and confidence. Also, his handling of Ashley Lelie and McNabb, moving AH to NT and his feud with Elway are examples of things Shanahan could have handled better, but never mentions. Shanahan didn't have to take the Redskins' job. He knew working for Snyder would be similar to working with Jerry Jones.

The story was already out there in 2014 and even before then, more than enough pieces were reported to anyone who was interested in connecting the dots. Embarrassing for a guy who collected as much money as Shanny did from Danny to bitch out and potentially make Griffin look like a sympathetic figure in that Washinton hot mess. He's doing it for one reason and that is that he wants back into the NFL. The narrative around here for years was that Shanny wanted RG3 and pushed for the trade. Now he wants everyone to know that it was all Danny Boy and that Griffin was uncoachable from the start.
Justafan
I wanted Shanny instead of Mularkey. Did Shanahan do some things wrong? Of course. Did he contribute to the RG3 fiasco? Sure. Is he still one of the greatest coaches in NFL history? You bet. It's important to keep in mind that the front office and coaching staff were completely out of sync and Shanny was sabotaged at every turn while he was in Washington. He's also been proven right on almost everything he's said and it's obvious that RG3 is a douche and the front office is what it is.
kyle021
I wouldn't touch Shannahan. I don't want any HC whose had personal problems with a QB anywhere near Mariota. I want a HC whose thankful and greatful for Mariota. However I also know Mariota wouldn't do some shit like try and get coaches fired, pull the offensive staff into a room and demand plays be deleted and protection schemes change in the manner RG3 did. To be honest, RG3 is lucky Fisher wasn't his HC.
socaltitan
If Shanahan was hired here, I don't think we'd have Jon Robinson as GM
wtenn
RG III deserves a little credit for the preparation he put into his presentation.

It does not bode them well once they start having to deal with adversity or even new, different challenges. But was he? People liked that he was well spoken, good student, and came from a military family and assumed he was fine. Maybe people needed to look deeper. luvyablue256
Shanahan is an insufferable egotistical bastard that ruined RG3 (and planned to from the beginning, hence the Cousins pick 2 rounds later) RG3 is an insufferable egotistical bastard and should have just rolled with the punches until Shanahan eventually dug his own grave with his brewing rift with Snyder. Case closed.

Case closed. Agree. RG3 didn't know the game. Similar to the VY situation. You might have perceived, know or heard your HC doesn't like or want you. Instead of doing your job and trying to prove your HC wrong, you try to fight the HC in every way possible. It's a losing battle. Do your job to the best of your ability and then try to get the hell out or wait until you have proven your value, then pull the power play. For anyone who thinks Shanahan didn't plan to get rid of RG3 as soon as possible. They can look at the way he treated Ashley Lelie. Shanahan thought Lelie was getting too big for his britches. So, he took a deep threat and started calling slants and hooks to get him beat up by LBs roving in coverage. Can you imagine a coach making Randy Moss run slants and hooks instead of stretching the defense? This was just to make a point. Don't feel sorry for Shanahan with his feud with RG3 or think he wasn't partly responsible for the fiasco in Washington. http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_4223300
luvyablue256
Vindictive, political, petty leaders like Shanahan don't belong in sports. Shanahan has proven to be all about himself. Fuck him, I hope he never coaches at any level, ever again.
Frank Andbeans
As long as RG3's presentation wasn't in front of teammates I have no issue with it. Players are entitled to opinions too and getting the coaches together and telling them what you think is pretty mature to me. Doesn't mean the coach has to give in to anything but that is damn good communication to me. I hate rigid hierarchy in sports. There should be a plan everyone buys into, not one to which they must submit. Hard to imagine an organization accomplishing anything when the coaching staff doesn't believe in what their doing before the season even starts. begooode
I hear ya FnB, but you have to know your place as a rook and your audience with an old line coach like Shanny. Capitalizing on a huge rookie year to outline what is/is not acceptable is just not going to play well with any HC worth a damn, imo. To do that solely because you have the owner in your pocket in full view of his teammates (who also quickly saw Griffin's faults) reads like a chapter 1 in undermining your coach. Communication and feedback, sure. Making demands? That reeks of a coach killing diva.

They routinely throw out things the QB isn't comfortable executing. It's called trying to maximize a player's talent and win games. There are too many examples where winning appears to be a secondary objective for Shanahan. Ego and control are priority #1. That's why he keeps floating these Washington stories. It's never his fault.
japan
I don't think it's puzzling as to what happened with RG3. Bad knee injury took away 75% of his game.
