Colts

I am creating this thread because I get the sense that many of you (and vegas) still believe that the Colts are the best team in our division. I actually think they may be the worst. Let's take a look at their roster:

QB - Andrew Luck

RB - Frank Gore, Robert Turbin

WR - T.Y Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, Brian Tyms, Quan Bray

TE - Dwayne Allen, Jack Doyle

OL - Anthony Castonzo, Jack Mewhort, Ryan Kelly, Joe Reitz, Danzelle Good

Yes, they have Andrew Luck but we have Mariota and Jags have Bortles. I don't think there is that much of a talent gap there. Secondly, their running back situation is horrible. Their starting running back is Frank Gore, who is 32 years old. He averaged 60 yards a game last year and being a year older won't help his production. T.Y. Hilton is a good wide receiver, but he isn't great. Donte Moncrief is an okay 2nd receiver. Phillip Dorsett is also average. Dwayne Allen is nothing special either. Their offensive line should be fine this year but I have no idea how that will actually turn out. All in all, They have a great quarterback, but their skill positions are for the most part below average.

NT - David Perry, Zach Kerr

DE - Henry Anderson, Kendall Langford, Arthur Jones, Hassan Ridgeway

OLB - Robert Mathis, Trent Cole, Trevor Bates, Erik Walden

ILB - D'Qwell Jackson, Nate Irving, Sio Moore, Antonio Morrison

CB - Vontae Davis, Patrick Robinson, D'Joun Smith, Jalil Brown

Nickel - Darius Butler, Tevin Mitchel

S - Clayton Geathers, Mike Adams, T.J. Green

They were 26th in total defense last year (24th in passing, 25th in rushing). Who they added:

CB - Patrick Robinson (a decent starting cornerback)

S - T.J. Green (who isn't projected to start)

DT - Hassan Ridgeway (depth pick)

LB - Antonio Morrison (depth pick)

Who they lost:

LB - Jerrell Freeman - their second leading tackler

S - Dwight Lowery (had 4 of their 17 interceptions)

Somehow we ranked 12th in total defense (7th in passing, 18th in rushing). We also did much more in free agency and in the draft. We upgraded our safety position, added depth to our cornerback position (and we get McCourty back from injury), added a pass rusher in Kevin Dodd, and added a starter in Austin Johnson to the line.

The Colts were 8-8 last year, and didn't get much better in the off season. There is no reason to still think that they are the best team in the AFC South.

I brought this up on the podcast, but didn't have a chance to talk about it in too much detail.

Are the Titans really any closer to competing in the division? Texans still have a fantastic defense plus more weapons to pair with Hopkins and a QB who - even if he doesn't meet expectations - should be better than what they had last year. Then the Jags had an incredible free agency and a mind-bogglingly good draft.

The Colts didn't have a great offseason, but they still have the most important trump card of all: the best QB in the division.

I think the Jags, Texans, and Colts are all 3 still a step above the Titans. Mariota being better than Bortles and Osweiler is our biggest hope for success (I think he is).

The toys have been purchased or discarded and now we need a real read of not only Mariota's progression but also what exactly does Mularkey offer as a HC?  We've already had a bad HC fit, so I'm not on the HCs don't matter much train.  How Mularkey's offense will feature Mariota while instituting his power schemes will be interesting to see over the first 4 games, hopefully setting the team on the right trajectory.

I agree that the Texans are the team to beat and Jags had an incredible offseason and could be really good. I would however argue that the Titans are in just as good as a position to win as the Colts.

The addition of Conklin and Jones is huge. Our biggest problem on offense was our QB getting obliterated. The scheme and personnel change will have a drastic impact on this aspect of us losing games because of sacks, and more importantly because our QB should stay healthy.

We got rid of Griffin. Huge addition by subtraction. We'll be getting Morgan and JMac back healthy, also a healthy Lewan. Add in Murray and Henry, to go with a true NT, and yes we are much closer to competing for the division than we were last year. We might not be there, but we will not be drafting #1 next year, which means we were more competitive. The degree of us being more competitive is yet to be seen, but we will absolutely be more competitive than we have the past two years.

The biggest question IMO is if last year was a fluke with Luck or not. Yes he was injured but he was not good at all for most of the year. If the Colts start off like they did last year then I think you have to question Lucks ability to take the next step, and where he goes so does the rest of the team.

I say this again: we can think a team had a good draft, but until they actually play on the field, we won't know. For 2 years now people have been talking up the Jags and it's gotten them 2 straight top 5 picks. I'm quite sick of the Jags being the media darling when the Titans and Jags have had equal number of wins over the past 3 years.

Until they prove it on the field, they still suck. Same can and should be said for the Titans. The difference is the media is constantly deep throating the Jags telling us how great they've done in the offseason.
