Mett vs Houston IV

Houston has abused the offensive line in these games and Mettenberger has taken the brunt of it.

Game one was the selfie game. He didn't survive game two. The tally in game three was fourteen hits, seven sacks and Whisenhunt's head. If round four is going to have a different result, the OL has to play better. Clearly. But I'll set that aside.

Mettenberger has to play better if the Titans want to win. I don't really buy that he's been held back by selfies and moustaches but perhaps his study habits are an issue and that's what is meant when he and the team discuss a more mature approach.

Some champion his deep passes but the reality is that these aren't necessarily the right decision. Wait too long for the deep pass and you may miss the underneath routes. You may also take an unnecessary hit. Or a sack. Especially with the protection the Titans offer.

Beyond that, interceptions like the deep one to Douglas are a problem and it's more than just having too much confidence in himself. Kuharsky wrote about Mettenberger seeing a fit versus a force and that's a big part of the problem. As Mularky said:

“The coverage should have taken him off of Harry immediately. That’s some of the things you should know pre-snap."

That Mettenberger couldn't read the defense (or didn't care) is as big a factor in his eight starts remaining winless as anything else. His arm talent allows him to throw daggers anywhere on the field. Not reading a defense too often places those daggers directly into the heart of the Titans.

It's time for Mettenberger to live up to the hype of being a premier backup. Football literacy is a prerequisite.

First, the offense needs to protect Mett. Clearly they need to double Watt and keep at least 1 TE in to block much of the game. With Wiz gone, we can hope they can at least get that much done finally.

But even if they give Mett enough time, he is going to have to avoid mistakes to win the game. They can't count on the run game for anything. It's mostly going to be on Mett's arm if they are going to have a chance to win. And on the receivers to make plays.

Good post. I've seen a couple of quotes from Mularkey where he mentions Mettenberger must do a better job of going through his progressions and coming back to the check downs.

Unlike some of our previous defensive coordinators, Romeo Crennel will not sit in a passive zone against a young QB. With this terrible OL, he has to take what the defense gives him.

We can't run the ball. That spells trouble when playing a good defense like the Texans. Mett has better pocket presence but he still looks like a statue back there. The only way we win is if we have a balanced attack. 50-50 run vs pass. I just don't see it.

Best description of Mettenberger I've seen on this site.

To me, Mett needs to show that he's more than just a big arm in this game.  We know he can sling the ball down the field but I need to see him consistently make the pre-snap reads and get the ball to the right guy.  I also want to see him take a step towards trusting what the read is telling him and a step away from trusting that his big arm can put the ball anywhere he wants.

He's got to be able to come in and win or else he's no good to us even as a backup.  I like the kid's upside but the truth is, he's gonna walk in free agency because there are just too many QB needy teams willing to give a kid with a big arm and a lot of upside a shot somewhere.  I would much rather have a solid veteran ala Matt Hasselbeck up in Indy who could step in and produce for a few games than a young QB with upside but if he steps in, it's turnover/sack city.
