The foundation would actually be QB.

I disagree. It starts in the trenches. I'd rather not see another good player come to the Titans in the twilight of their career. They make great segments on 3HL but little else.

You mean the one where he threw a 40 yard frozen rope to Jarvis Landry as he was being crushed? Yeah, I saw that already, most guys don't react well to having their ACL torn. The fact that he stood tall knowing he was going to get crushed is all I need to know.

Yup, that he may be dumb enough to get himself knocked out of the game and or league by doing it a 4th time in about 9 games played.

I don't understand how you can just take as a given that Rivers would sign here after next year.

That seems outright insane to assume.

I never said it was a given.

Just seemed like a good plan if Mett fails. Certainly a better plan than trading the #2 pick for him.

Rivers isn't taking the 2015 Titans to the Superbowl. Might as well continue to build through the draft, and see what we have in Mett. If Mett fails, than by 2016, we'll have a stout defense, what should be an improved offense and we'd be looking for a plug and play QB.

Although, I could see how the Titans would be attractive to him. We'd have the opening at QB, Whiz and Rivers like each other and work well together, we'll have the $$$'s to spend, and he's from the area (athens AL).

Besides, it's not a given that we would end up trading #2 and then he could walk anyway.

What about the 4 years prior to this when he never missed a game? I also like how you frame it, 3 missed games in his last 8, rather than 3 missed in 4 years. Or how you ignore that in any other circumstance he would've sat out a week & let his very minor shoulder injury heal but they needed to evaluate him so he went out & played & re-injured it.

Doesn't Mett have some back problem as well... that he changed his throwing motion to remedy? I haven't heard if it's ever been an issue since late 2012 though.

EDIT: Mettenberger has Spondylolysis, per Rapoport, and it was treated non-surgically. "Mettenberger’s condition... flared up in 2012, not 2013. He altered his mechanics to help," Rapoport added. "LSU trainer Jack Marucci said "this shouldn't be a big deal as long as you treat it."

I wonder if any hits he takes would cause a problem in the future.

I didn't even realize this.

My biggest problem with Mett is that he's shown an inability to stay healthy.

I don't think I can take another 4 years of Locker-esque "will he or won't he play" crap.

Thanks to wiki:

Spondylolysis pain can lead to reduced mobility and inactivity. Inactivity can result in weight gain, loss of bone density, and loss of muscle strength and flexibility of other areas of the body. Spondylolysis can progress until one or more vertebrae slip out of place which is then called spondylolisthesis.

Over time, degenerative changes of spondylolysis can cause serious complications including:[4]

  • low back, mid back, and neck pain
  • Spinal Stenosis – where the spinal canal becomes narrow and the spinal cord can become pinched; can occur in the neck or low back.
  • Cauda equina syndrome – a syndrome where the nerves at the bottom of the spinal cord are compressed by an intervertebral disc or mass; rare but can cause severe nerve problems.
  • Radiculopathy – a condition where one or more spinal nerves are compressed.
  • Spinal Myelopathy

Again, he played 4 straight years without incident until the last game of his college career. The injury this year is being totally overblown, he got hit late & driven into the ground by JJ Watt after he threw a pass & got a grade 1 shoulder sprain. He should've sat out a week & he's be fine but they needed to evaluate him.

It's something to factor in but this is way overblown. It's football, guys get hurt. Perhaps if the top FOUR offensive tackles hadn't gotten injured he wouldn't have either.

He's missed 3 games in the last 4 years...You're reaching with the injury prone issue. The Spondy has not been an issue in his career. And there is no indication that it will be. If it was as big of a concern as you're claiming we wouldn't have even drafted him. He's lost 0 playing time due to it. You're looking for any way you can spin this into a Locker situation. I can make damn near any player look injury prone with the way you're framing things.

I somewhat I agree the "spondy" isn't a huge issue. But injury history is one of the reasons we drafted him so late. We waited until the 6th.
