That's the beauty of having depth at the position. Seattle and the 9ers excel at rotating based on packages, keeping players fresh, and keeping OCs guessing. A guy like Donald can play the 5 tech on s

Does he have the hips to play olb? He certainly has the straightline speed for a 34 olb. I do not like using predominantly rush only olbs as it lends to predictability.

And he does weigh a little less than an ideal 5'tech but with that strength/speed combo he would do fine if he can stay low and use leverage to his advantage.

He probably could 5 tech, but he doesn't have the length you usually want there. Usually power players are the ones that succeed as a 5 and that limits Donald's dynamic rushing ability. His 3 cone time was on par with a lot of DE/OLB prospects and on film he seems to have good change of direction. There are definitely successful LBs in the NFL with worse agility (Hali, Woodley, Orakpo...). Coverage-wise most OLBs don't do more than drop into shallow zones or occasionally bump/bracket TEs. I'm sure he could do that... The question is if he could translate his inside rush talents to the edge (pretty sure he could and he'd still be able to move inside against 3/4 wide formations.

I'm on board with figuring it out at camp.

Seriously though, this guy has the athleticism to play all across the defense. He's probably the safest pick in the draft, and I wouldn't be surprised if he's gone before our pick.

He dominated last season and has some of the most impressive tape. He goes to the Senior bowl and embarrasses two projected 1st round Guards and is virtually unblockable. He goes to the combine and puts on a show, adding "freak athlete" to his resume. He doesn't take plays off and he isn't a known cancer.

It's too bad he's not the type of player we're probably looking for, being as he's a Casey clone and would play the same position, but he's a hard guy to pass on. He's a lethal pass rusher inside and has a lot of strength for his size.

I get the feeling the coaches can find a role for him -- Casey played a lot more run support in the past, and it's possible that they could find a way to use both guys with alternating roles. Certainly in pass rush situations, a duo of Donald and Casey would help the DEs and make the defense look a lot better.

Plus, while we all want to keep Casey, there is definitely the risk of him out-pricing himself for us and testing Free Agency.

Not quite as fast as McCarthy who ran a 4.59 but faster than Ayers who ran a 4.70 at his pro day with a 1.62 10 yd split. His 3-cone was as good as Ayers as well. The kid is a freak and you just get those kind of guys and figure out how to use them.

McCarthy ran a 4.65 officially at the combine, so not much faster timed. But of course, we're talking timed speed vs. real game fluid movement, and Donald is obviously a penetrating DT and not a LB. Still, it's just to show that he has all the physical tools to be a premier player, even if his height/weight is slightly less than ideal. That's exactly why Casey and Atkins went late and if teams re-drafted, those guys would have been top 15 picks.

This pretty much sums it up. I really don't know what more you can possibly want from a prospect. Huge production in college, plays his ass off & has good character, dominated the Senior Bowl, and a combine for the ages. The only downside is he's 6'1? Really? Hell, in some ways the height is an advantage with leverage. This kids as clean a prospect as you'll find. A physical freak with the production to match. He really shouldn't even fall out of the top 3, but it sounds like he will. I'm at the point where he's the guy I want, no question. Who cares if he's similar to Casey, having 2 dominant DTs never hurt anybody as far as I can remember.

Casey's 6'1

Geno Atkins was about the same weight as Donald when he participated in the Sr. Bowl. Now's he listed at 303 lb. I think Donald can get up to 300 too

I'd still prefer a QB or OLB. Donald wouldn't make me complain, though I'd be a little concerned about our ability to stop the run which hasn't been good

When the Texans draft Clowney---will the Titans bring in a vet tackle or sign a cornerstone for the future???

I'm going to run with Matthews, Robinson, or Lewan...

So you are for trading up then right?

I doubt any of those three are available at 11.

Can't recall who I was listening to yesterday but they said Donald essentially had the perfect pre-draft season. He went to the senior bowl and dominated the best competition and then had the dream combine.

I'd be very happy with the Titans drafting him. He provides pressure on the QB, more importantly inside pressure.

He's perfect for Horton's 1 gap scheme and would be a nightmare to pair with Casey.

I've seen him compared to former Vikes DT John Randle.

and I could see another team trading up to get him.. so if there are no OT's or olb's worth the pick, it may come down to between him and Gilbert or trade for us..

Randle's a great comparison. If we did pick Donald & he panned out, I have a hard time recalling a team with 2 great pass rushing DT's like this. You have teams with 2 great DT's, but it's usually a run stopper & rusher type, like the Vikings with Pat & Kevin Williams. It would be awesome to get a ton of pressure up the middle like that, especially with just a 4 man rush. Nothing kills a gameplan like pressure up the middle.
