Scouting the Opposition: Chiefs - Week 5

Just want to add another note here - I was curious to see if there was any data to support my belief that the Chiefs can be run on off-tackle so I looked up some defensive line statistics on Football Outsiders.

-Kansas City is giving up 7.39 Adjusted Line Yards when teams run off the right tackle. That's 32nd - worst in the league. (Almost 1.6 ALY worse than the next team). They're 24th on the left tackle side (4.48 ALY).

Nice Article. @Cyrus I was thinking the same. This is going to be CJ vs JC. Battle can pound then some, but CJ is going to have to show up this game. I didn't know they were giving up so much yardage to the run outside. Fitz will need to move the chains and not look for the big play too often. I'm sure they will test KC deep a few times, but the Titans need to eat clock and keep Charles off the field. The Titans will have to keep pressure on Smith like you said. They are the best defense he's faced this season and it's at LP Field.

so we should be able to run on them.. This SHOULD/BETTER be CJs break out game.. If the man still has anything electric left in his tank we should see it this weekend..

I think this will be CJs best game of the year..

I am actually pretty shocked that the national media seems to really be liking the titans D and team in general.. EVEN with Fitz playing they are seeing us beating or giving KC hell..

Is the Chiefs defense really that weak against the run? They struggled with McCoy in week 3 but other than that game, I feel they've been pretty solid.

You would be correct. Dang it for bringing this up before the podcast was posted!!!

We talk about it on there. They really only had one bad game and that was against the Eagles. Vick also rushed for a lot in that game. Outside that, they haven't given up a run longer than 15 yards.

David Wilson had some good runs to the right side. The problem is that Gilbride is stubborn and he kept going to the pass game. The Cowboys had a few good runs to the left tackle, but Murray is a bit stiff and is more of an inside runner. I genuinely believe that you can run off tackle on them (similar to the Texans).

As for the Chiefs offense as well, there's a lot of influence from Chris Ault. Smith is typically lined up in the shotgun with Charles lined up behind him. (Not generally pistol which is 3 yards). For this reason a lot of the Chiefs formations look very similar run or pass even if they run a lot of concepts out of it. The reality though is that they're tremendously limited with Smith under center because passing outside the numbers is incredibly rare for them. They've become very dependent on passing to Charles out of the back field .

Conspiracy!!! Someone was purposefully trying to set up CJ for another game to look bad in.  We hear all this messaging about how the Titans should be able to run on them and how this should be CJ's game and then BOOM!  The secret is they really aren't bad against the run.  Who do I blame for this?  Jamal, Oman, Cyrus!!!  They're all in on it!!!

I think you are over playing the issues with Smith's arm. You do not need a rocket to play in Reid's system although McNabb did have a really good arm. Garcia is a good example of a QB that had success in Reid's offense. Smith is playing well.
