But IF we are taking requests here, ahem, I would be a BIG fan of a weekly edition showing one-play breakdowns (like Superhorn or Frank&Beans on CJs TD run). Mort used to do this back in the TCentral days and his posts were always football focused with WAY less poster on poster slagging. Straight up football nirvana. I think Reo hit on it more than anyone though. Different articles are going to appeal to different people. As many of you know, I myself interned with Titans Radio and wrote many of these basic, informative articles. You guys have heard the people who call into the post-game show. That's the kind of people those articles are targeting. They certainly serve a purpose, as do the more in-depth articles. The problem, which has also been pointed out, is these in-depth articles require more time and effort. As far as I know, TitansReport doesn't exactly have a massive budget to bring in a star-studded lineup of writers. I think what Mercalius is pointing out is that he has no interest in these articles and they don't appeal to him. Fine. I read ESPN every day and there are always articles I don't care for. For me personally, I don't get much out of the "informative" articles either. But it's because I eat, sleep, and breath Titans. The minute news breaks or a tweet goes out, I'm already making my own conclusions and collecting the information in my head. In contrast, I know plenty of Titans fans (my parents for one) who would probably enjoy reading those articles because they don't keep up with the information like I do. Here we have Josh doing what he thinks to be a good thing by growing the board, attracting new perspectives, new members, new listeners, etc. and on the other hand, we're quick to judge those perspectives and deem them irrelevant or unwanted. But that begs the question...are they needed? Needed for what purpose? There's no question that pretty much everyone who has weighed in on this is what I would consider a "hardcore" fan. We frequent the website and read anything we can get our hands on regarding the Titans. But are we really content with the same perspectives? Are we content with hearing from the same contributors over and over? Every one learns differently and every one is going to appreciate different approaches. If we have a "newbie" who comes in who isn't a hardcore fan, do we want to run that person off so they never post again? Perhaps they actually want to learn more about the x's and o's of football. So what if they don't? Are we saying we're a board that values only the opinion of the hardcore? Maybe we are... What kind of website do we really want TR to be? Heck, what kind of website does Josh want TR to be? He's put far more money, time and effort into this than anyone knows. All for what? I obviously can't speak for him, but I believe it's because he loves the camaraderie we have and he loves the Titans. I don't think Josh or Jamal were implying that a critical eye or disagreement is a bad thing. Quite the contrary in fact. I do think it's discouraging though for someone like Josh (again, my words not his) to put so much time and effort into attracting new visitors and new perspectives to the site...only to have that rejected. If he wants to grow the site by attracting more casual fans, then I think that's totally fine. Heck, maybe they'll even learn a little bit and turn into a "hardcore" poster like many of us. However...TR will ALWAYS be about the hardcore fan and I don't think Josh or anyone else wants to change that (my words). The in-depth analysis we've come to know and expect when you're here...will still be here. I also think TR has a particular culture that you won't find anywhere else. You have to have a pretty thick skin to post here much less write articles. Its just the tone and culture of the site. That can change through moderation, but you lose freedom of thought and expression which this site (in its multiple forms) has always valued. Its not going to change much. I love the idea of bringing in more traffic but I think if the plan is to keep the culture of freedom - then at some level we have to accept that this site will never be for a mass audience. There is a quote from The American President that love. "America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours." That is this site in both its good and bad. It's also why I always appreciate certain posters that are willing to confront the more negative posters- their willingness to call them out and get into the dirt of a message board- so that the balance between the e-bullies and those with that decent moral fiber can be kept. I think this site needs those posters and as long as they have them- then this 'dark side' to the freedom of expression won't dominate the culture of the boards.
