Either Finny should have said he was leaving because he was insulted or he should have told the team he had an emergency to tend to. Either way I still hope they agree to an extension. notsolegato Posted August 8, 2011 Report Share Posted August 8, 2011 Well, I talked to my guy and he said procedure is typically: the agent will notify the team, and he will also consult with the NFLPA and they will advise as to whether or not they should notify the league. Typically there is no need to do that, because the team will let the NFL know. Of course, now that I get back here I see how things actually played out...but now we know for next time. Stop being douchebags. Being a professional goes out the window when you have family issue. And what being a professional in a normal work environment and an NFL environment are completely separate issues. Stop trying to relate being an NFL player to other professions. It is not the same. One is a game, the other real world work. Actually, when you employ someone for almost $4,000,000 a year I would say it is extremely real world. No1TitansFan Posted August 8, 2011 Report Share Posted August 8, 2011 If you read Finnegan's comments, he is stating that he contacted the team and notified them but he does not say when he did this. A likely scenario is he contacted the team sometime Saturday, either after the scrimmage, or after the team had left BSP so that MM and MR were oblivious about it. He never actually claims that he contacted the team Friday or pre-scrimmage on Saturday. This could well be a case of him contacting the team after the fact for whatever the reason. Basically the media knew that Finnegan had abruptly left camp without notifying the team and ran with the story that it was over the contract issue; that's what Finnegan is upset about, his leaving might not have had anything to do with his financial situation and he did not appreciate being potrayed as a malcontent who would walk out on his teammates over a financial issue. I thought he was done in Sept. 2008. Finnegan should say "I was wrong, I am sorry", then STFU and play football. Even if the personal matter was legitimate, there is no excuse not to notify your employer. That is expected from people making $10.00 an hour, let alone almost $4 mil a year. No one is expected to put team over family. Everyone is expected to communicate. Finny is a hothead. It's been proven. He has a history and that history tags along behind him. No way this whole story washes clean as a misunderstanding. He'd be better off saying , "I got mad, I screwed up. I'm sorry. I'm back and here to do my job. Case closed." I understood him to say that Finny followed procedure by reporting it to the NFL. WG, I did not say that football was more important than family, nor did I mean to imply that. I understand and agree with all your points related to this; HOWEVER, I was raised with a midwestern work ethic that leaves no room for shirking your responsibilities to your employer or anyone counting on you for any reason, unless it is life-and-death--and then, you report as SOON as you are able. I stand by that. The only way it's excusable for Finny to leave camp and not tell anyone and disappear for two days is if his mother died or was hospitalized, or something very serious happened to his kid. And then, I don't give him a pass for being AWOL that long; no way. You call. You have a responsibility and it's inexcusable to bail like that without telling anyone. I didn't say football over family -- I'm saying you honor your responsibilities. The whole thing is suspect, as we all know. If he did not have a serious family emergency, I will be very disappointed in his character for exploiting the emotions and goodwill of Titans fans and others, not to mention disappointed that he so blatantly LIED. People start running off at the mouthing spouting off their BS when they don't know what really happened. They just speculate. Maybe he did not have his phone on him when he left or after he left. Likely? No, but it is probable. From what I've read he left at night. Calls made to the team would likely have occurred the next day during the day. If he was at a hospital or something he very well may have not had his phone on him. People just need to stop jumping to conclusions. Think for yourself and take whatever the media reports with a grain of salt. Let's put this in perspective here people. He plays a freaking game for a living. His job is not life or death. Sure he makes a boat load of money for his profession, but he already has earned quite a bit over the years as well. If this is truly about the contract dispute then fine, fire away. But stop making assumptions and crucifying the man without any true knowledge of the situation. What you or I would do in a real world job does not make a damn difference in regards to his situation.
