It's dumb. They could have gotten way more for him.

My working theory is they might have seen Butler's market stalling out and other big players making "demands" and felt like they had to move covertly precisely to not get Luka involved.

I have a hard time believing they didn’t do what they could to get the best return possible.  It would be 100% incompetent and irresponsible if that was the case.

Do you follow the NBA? Doncic is a top 5 player at 25. The market for him would have been insane. Teams spend years in hell dreaming of being able to flip assets for a guy like that.

They only got one first round pick for him.  Thats the insane part .  There are multiple teams w/multiple picks , some unprotected (Rockets, Spurs , Thunder) that would have gladly given it up to the Mavs.

 

The Rockets have been waiting for Devin Booker to become available and Doncic is obviously on another level.

 

I’m not buying the Lakers fix on this one though. This is just an awful brain dead trade. The Pau Gasol seemed way more fishier.

Lots of talk among Mavs fans that this is the first step of the new owners wanting to move the team to Vegas. They didn’t want to pay the super max contract that Luka was due to sign, and trading the face of the franchise (And top 5 overall NBA player) will cripple local support giving them a better shot at relocating. 

 

I haven’t seen a single Mavs fan who has said they will still root for the team. Tons of people saying they won’t ever step foot in the arena again, and will cancel season tickets. 
 

The new owners are Casino owners and they want Texas to legalize gambling so they can build a super complex that includes hotels and casinos all around a new stadium. If they can’t get Texas to legalize gambling, they want to move the team to Vegas and build there.

I agree.  It doesn’t make a lot of sense.  There has to be something we don’t know.  The Nets got like five picks for Bridges in the offseason.

This makes sense.  Cuban isn’t really in charge anymore, right? He’s just the public face at this point.  I don’t think there is any chance in hell he would have ok’d this move.

Right, I knew there was something going on between the two of them.  I seem to remember the two of them were equated to two track and field guys in the early 90s.  Dan and Dave or something like that.

Nah, Jackson was sort of a slightly above average player.  Nowhere close to the talent level of those two track and field guys.

 

The context here is that the Mavs were the worse team in the NBA from 91-94.  They basically drafted Jackson (missed out on Shaq, Mourning etc) and Webber /Hardaway the next year and had to settle for Mashburn.  Anyway , they traded all 3 guys in rapid fashion afterwards and became a joke until they drafted Nowitzki.

This is basically what they've been saying on reddit... But it still makes zero sense as to why the LAkers and not somewhere that they get more capital back.

 

So you have to go look at the GM...

 

The GM is apparently drinking buds with Lakers GM. He's also a pharmaceutical sales rep -  turned player accounts rep for Nike. - turned GM. He never had NBA FO experience at all when he was hired to run the team. Also this nugget of how stupid he might be...

 

"During his work at Nike, he botched a 2013 presentation to Stephen Curry, where according to Harrison he may have called him Seth, and the presentation used was made for Kevin Durant. This, along with not offering Curry a signature shoe, caused the superstar to switch from Nike and sign with Under Armor." this is after Stephs breakout year where he showed himself to be a top10 player.

 

Or look at the league... who constantly says that the league flourishes when the LAkers are good.
