Aren't Reese and Murray kind of the same guy?

Reese showed better in coverage during the season when he played. I can see the logic in giving him a shot with Murray, but you have to nail down other positions with talented players

The only thing that makes sense as to why they are sitting on their hands with a pile of cash is Sneed. I'm not holding my breath, but this team has too many holes, and nowhere near enough draft picks. They have to sign some players.

Def need a good strong safety in that scenario

There are plenty of older 1-2yr rental guys that can be had at CB/S but I have no idea what Carthon is doing at the IDL/LB he has sat idle and watched those groups be picked through.

I’d be inclined to pencil in Reese at LB, plan to draft another, and let a bunch of guys (including Chance Campbell and Gibbens) compete for the job.

Ya, I think the splash of day one signing for us kinda changed everyone's perspective around here. We were expecting to be in a 2 year rebuild but everyone is back in we look decent mode because of what we have signed. But this was kinda expected still having holes to fill this year.

I am fine with giving Reese a shot, but you have to upgrade DL and DB still or this is a trainwreck of a defense

This offseason is about the offense while bringing in players on defense who are young and could potentially be core pieces. The defense is going to be shit regardless, but it could potentially be one that knows how to create turnovers through pressure schemes, which is why they signed Murray.

It's going to be more aggressive than the Baltimore defense. You don't sign Murray to that contract and have the intention to run a bend but don't break scheme. It's going to be a lot of cover 0, cover 1 robber, and fire zone.

If you guys go back and watch the defense Baltimore ran against Texas and KC in the playoffs, that's what we are going to see a lot of without the talent but with the idea of scoring fast on both sides of the ball. Pressure schemes forcing teams into turnovers while giving up huge plays, but leading to getting the ball back in the hands of the offense one way or another.

We'll certainly mix in some complex coverages at times and rush four, highlighting what we have in Key, Landry, and Simmons, but that will be mostly on 3rd and long plays with a pressure look pre-snap. We are done with the days of vanilla defense on early downs leading to cover 0 on 3rd getting burned. It will be the inverse.

I'm not talking shit about Bowen here either. Go and watch those playoff game recaps and that's going to be our base defense.

They can draft a coverage LB later to compete with Otis Reese for the spot. I figured they would sign a decent coverage guy and then draft the chase and tail or let Reese take that spot, but ILB is not the spot I would want to sink large sums of cap space into anyway.

These same scouts found David Long and Javon Brown. The 49ers scored some great ILBs late. I'm not saying you should rely on that (I would have preferred they land Baker), but they have the insurance of having both Doc Gibby and a rising Reese to hold down the fort if they miss.

They obviously think a blitzing/downhill LB is harder to find. They signed Murray to more than what Baker got even though he's the better player thus far.
