So do they have the choice with somebody like Landry or is it just your first eight? If you can't choose, that's kind of dumb. And if they chose to allow for him to return, that's oddly hopeful but I guess for a player of his caliber maybe it's worth it.

Just looked it up.  It only counts if they actually bring them back.  The designation doesn't really mean anything until then.

Seems like he's just tracking how many people have that designation because they're already up to five of eight. I have no idea what happens after 8; whether or not they can swap people out or if the new people just can't get that designation.

It’s those that actually get cleared to return that count against the limit - almost positive.

And reporters are using loose language here too. “designated to return” and “eligible to return” are very different things.

That would be implementation that actually makes sense. Everybody can come back but you can only do it eight times.

It’s only worth counting when they start bringing people back if the Is that you can only bring eight back in a season. It’s just odd to throw out Landry out there in the context of the conversation since he’s got a season ending injury. He’s got zero chance of coming back this season unless he did not tear his ACL, which of course would be important news to break…

For what it’s worth, the fact that there’s a limit of 8 IR returns means a lower level player is less likely to be brought back in order to save potential returns for better players.

For example, they may decide to just leave Chance Campbell on IR longer than 4 week even if he’s physically able to return simply because Joe Jones is not much of a drop off. And then come November if they haven’t used many of their allotment of 8 returns maybe they bring back some depth guys.

You can put an unlimited number of players on IR but each team is limited to 8 activations off the IR list this season, this can include the same player multiple times but each time would count as 1 towards that limit of 8.

It’s interesting that these local media guys actually get paid to do what they do and still aren’t very good at it.

Well it's not like journalists are known for being some of the more intelligent professionals in our society.  If we're being honest, it doesn't take much...

Did he play well? Legit question, I have no clue.

He held up pretty good. I remember him breaking up a pass for Irvin and getting up and pointing to his knee

After 8 they can't designate them to return, if they go on IR they're done for the year.

No they are automatically designated to return because they were on the 53 they can put an unlimited on IR but only 8 can return

Rod Woodson blew out his ACL in week 2 and played in the SB against Dallas in 95

It’s physically possible, just highly unlikely. None of us knows the severity of the tear or how long Landry will take to heal. It would be on the extreme end of things for him to be back by even the Super Bowl.
