Starkiller
https://www.theonion.com/putin-vows-retaliation-should-ukraine-become-member-of-1850752264 Warning that President Volodymyr Zelensky should think carefully about the repercussions of changing his country’s college football conference alignment, Russian president Vladimir Putin reportedly vowed retaliation Friday should Ukraine ever become a member of the Big Ten. “There is absolutely no reason why Ukraine needs to join the Big Ten outside of provoking Russia, and any move to apply for membership will be met with the harshest consequences,” said Putin, pointing to Ukraine’s position in the neutral firewall of countries that have long served as a geographical buffer between Russia and Big Ten members like Indiana University and Rutgers. “Any move to even increase the number of games between Ukraine and Big Ten schools will be considered an act of aggression against the Russian state and will be met with proportionate force. These universities have been stoking hostility against Russia for decades, and we caution Ukraine not to indulge their thirst for power. Frankly, this is for Zelensky’s own good. We know why the University of Michigan co-founded the Big Ten all those years ago as a vehicle for its own nefarious interests in NCAA Division I sports, and we urge Ukraine not to become a puppet of [University of Michigan athletic director] Alan Haller in a prolonged proxy season between the Big Ten schools and Russia.” At press time, tensions were rising after Russia pulled their ambassador from Penn State. nine
Dang....poor Russia just can't catch a break. Obviously the past year and a half has been an exercise in national embarrassment for Russia after having their supposedly dominant military exposed and humiliated in Ukraine. Now the Russian space program's first moon landing in fifty years has ended in disaster and appears to be a total loss. https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/20/world/luna-25-spacecraft-moon-collision-intl/index.html It's been a really, REALLY bad year for Putin and his entire regime. You can't help but wonder how many more international embarrassments and multi-billion dollar fuck-ups the Russian people will be willing to accept before demanding a change in leadership. I cannot recall the faster fall of a geopolitical ‘Superman’ than that of Putin’s calamitous last two years.

The whole Russia situation has been somewhat reminiscent of Desert Storm….when Saddam Hussein’s bravado and saber-rattling had everyone nervous about going into Iraq against what was supposedly a dedicated, highly disciplined, and highly trained military. But once US forces hit the ground, they absolutely steamrolled what turned out to be a shoddy ragtag group of Iraqi fighters, many of whom voluntarily surrendered without a single shot being fired. Russia’s army hasn’t been quite THAT bad…but with the whole world regarding them as a supposed military superpower, the way they’ve been thoroughly outclassed by actual modern weapons has been an embarrassment of epic proportions.
