I'm guessing Xi took notice… He's recently on record blaming the war in Ukraine on the collapse of the Soviet Union. He thinks reuniting the old Soviet Union is his destiny. He's not stopping. I think the only way Xi tries something is either b/c he needs a distraction from problems at home and/or the US gets pulled into a direct conflict w/ Russia and he thinks they're distracted or drawn thin enough that he can get away w/ taking Taiwan. I think invading Taiwan would only add to any problems Xi might have at home rather than distract from them. Massive economic sanctions from America, Europe, Australia, etc would be crushing on top of any possible issues already ongoing.
