The suit alleges that top NRA executives misused charitable funds for personal gain, awarded contracts to friends and family members, and provided contracts to former employees to ensure loyalty.

Seeking to dissolve the NRA is the most aggressive sanction James could have sought against the not-for-profit organization, which James has jurisdiction over because it is registered in New York. James has a wide range of authorities relating to nonprofits in the state, including the authority to force organizations to cease operations or dissolve.

This is not a good move 3 months from the most critical election this country has seen in decades. Now the GOP has all the ammo they need to claim Democrats and Liberals are coming after their guns.

Maybe. But those voters are probably voting republican anyway. And the NRA was already going to attack Biden as coming after their guns.

In the end, this gives the other side a counter narrative of corruption within the NRA. And tie that into the fact they were part of the Russian effort to promote Trump, both through Maria Butina and millions in Russian money funneled through the NRA to campaign for Trump.

I'm sure all the media outlets are going to go out of their way to cover the nuances of NRA corruption.

Sometimes you really struggle to look at anything through a lens other than the ultra left.

The NRA and its independent charitable foundation also came under fire in a separate lawsuit filed by the District of Columbia’s attorney general on Thursday.

The D.C. lawsuit alleges that instead of serving its stated charitable purposes, the NRA Foundation became a vessel that supported the NRA’s financial interests.

When the NRA faced financial shortfalls due to “improper, lavish spending,” the lawsuit says the corporation turned to its foundation for help.

The NRA Foundation operates independently from the NRA, but the lawsuit alleges this independence was breached and the Foundation’s Board of Trustees failed in their oversight duty by overseeing millions of dollars in loans to the NRA.

Who cares? The NRA is going to attack Biden no matter what...

A bit shortsighted here, potentially.  The NRA was going to attack Biden, yes.  BUT they were weakened and busy in their own self-inflicted triage.  Now, otoh, they can play the card they always play "we are under attack from Dems!!  Don't believe their fake news, blah blah,... this is all about blue states taking away your 2nd amendment that only the NRA stands for,.. blah, blah..."

Pro-gun Independent voter reading only headlines says, "hmmmm,..."  and never gets to the financial transgressions or minimizes them.

imo, bring charges on the NRA, making it all about financial self-dealing, corruption, transgressions against their charity status.  But don't go for dissolution.  You let that happen organically by a betrayed membership, after their leadership has been exposed.

A corollary story, similar to the Streisand effect -- when the world starting crapping all over whaling communities.  Many of those communities were already seeing a sharp decline in whale meat consumption from their kids.  the industry was dying. Then do-gooders started naming and shaming , and the locals responded with a renewed nationalistic pride that they used to popularize the whaling industry with their younger generations.  Sometimes it's better to leave shit alone.

The NRA doesn’t have as many members as they claim.  Once you pay dues they leave your name on their rolls regardless if your dues are current.  They are nothing more than a gun manufacturer lobbyist.

The right wing media and the NRA are going to spin it, obviously. But they were already going to go hard after Biden because that’s what all right wing organizations do.

None of this is going to swing the election because people have already taken sides. Pro-gun people who see this as an important concern are not voting for Biden regardless.

Yeah, we kinda needed swing voters in November.

Then spin it as fighting corruption (which is exactly what it is). People who are swing voters can actually be appealed to on those grounds. The pro-gun folk generally can’t be.
