No, because they don’t want to pay his roster bonus next month.

That was converted to a signing bonus last year.  They would take a 10.7 M cap hit by trading him but it would add 32 M in dead money.

The key, if the Lions are indeed serious, is what price they want as the team getting Stafford would be getting a 32-year old QB under contract through 2022 with unbelievable cap numbers compared to the player as the prorated SB money is all on Detroit.

2020 - 8.3 M cap number

2021 - 20 M

2022 - 23 M

I don't think the Titans would contemplate this - mainly because of the draft compensation price it would take.  The Lions will not give Stafford away.

Those cap number allow an extra elite defensive player signed over paying RT $30M/yr...Say keep Logan Ryan or perhaps get a Donte Fowler type...

I still think I keep RT, but it is an interesting thought experiment on team building...

True - of course I believe the trade compensation would be a major issue so you may be giving away a 1st and a 3rd or something like that.  Such a move would necessitate using free agency to fill holes and usually that means paying good players great money....

Right. Let Tannehill walk who had a historic season and won CBPOY, took us to the AFCCG, and in the process had the highest QBR in the NFL, and had he played from week 1 he likely shatters all of the Titans/Oilers records and passes for 4K and 30+ TD’s

but yeah.

let him walk and trade for Stafford instead bc he may be cheaper. Lets also act like Stafford wouldn’t ask for a new deal to pay him long term and make the same money Tannehill would get and how much it would affect the locker room.

Tannehill knows the system and is respected by every player on this roster and he is JR’s QB.

No.

If Stafford is traded he probably gets traded to TB. He is a perfect fit for Arians offense.

If he was traded to an AFC team it would probably be the Raiders or Chargers and a dark horse would be the Cowboys if they can’t reach a deal with Dak

Of course the Titans wouldn't take him over Tannehill unless Tannehill just wanted stupid money.

But a team like the Pats, one step form being in QB trouble, might think about it for sure.  Better than hitching to Brady for one season at $30 mil.

In fact any team needing a QB should consider him as opposed to using a top 10 pick on one.  You don't give the Lions a top 5 pick for him but you might give them your early 2nd and maybe some compensation next year.  I'd take Stafford over a rookie who you have no idea about.

I feel bad for all the best Lions players. They waste great careers on teams that never go anywhere. Amazing that they can not get anything right other than picking a great player once every team years and wasting them.

I never perceived him as a very good QB. I'm surprised by those numbers.

Whats really crazy is i was mentioning Stafford recently and someone also made the same comments about not seeing him as a good QB.

A lot of this has to do with the Lions being a piss poor organization. The Lions regularly have fielded mediocre defenses the last 10 years making it harder for the team to win

From 2001 thru 2008 the eight years before Stafford was drafted the Lions had eight straight losing seasons that including going 2-14 twice, 3-13 twice,5-11 twice and 0-16 the year before he was drafted.

Before getting hurt he was playing at an MVP-caliber level, with 19 passing touchdowns(on pace to throw 40), 2,499 passing yards(on pace for 5,000) and a 106 quarterback rating which was 6th best in the NFL in eight games.

Stafford has had 7 seasons in the top 10 regarding game winning drives/4th quarter comebacks and in his career has 34 game winning drives and 28 fourth quarter comebacks. Pretty good.

He also has 7 seasons in the top 10 regarding passing yards, passes completed and total offense.

He has 5 seasons in the top 10 in regards to passer rating, pass completion percentage

Stafford was the 31st best player in the NFL for the NFL 100 top players in 2017 and 2018.

Stafford threw for 4.000 yards or more 7 straight years and played all 16 games 8 straight years.
