Friday, Jon Meacham, the presidential historian, said that in Nixon's last days, the Secretary of Defense ordered  the Pentagon that any military actions, ordered by President Nixon, had to be approved through him, the Secretary of Defense, first because he was worried President Nixon might order military and tanks to the DC to bunker down and fight it out.   Meacham did not say what gave the Secretary of Defense the authority to do that, instead shifting to other presidential history.

President Nixon was intelligent and rational, so if the Pentagon took steps to protect the military from him, I assume they have extra safeguards against President Trump.

Nixon example start around 0:50 mark:

This whole shit show. The fact we have the longest shutdown in history with no end in sight and no negotiations.

And at the same time the FBI is leaking the story about the counterintelligence investigation into Trump and other people in the admin are leaking the story about the putin meetings.

Reo said a few days ago that this shutdown fight is the stand and I'm starting to think he's right. Trump is not going to give in. He doesn't want to lose his base and he loves the ratings and chaos from the shutdown. He is showing to everyone he will burn the whole fucking thing down and that his base will be behind him.

Im just saying we may look back one day and say this was the beginning of the constitutional crisis.

But he probably is and this shutdown is causing it.  He is starting to materially slip in the non-college education white group in just the last month.  It could be random noise but based on what is happening, it is likely a real decline.

It doesn't matter. He believes this fight is important to his base and he believes this is good politics and defense for him and a good distraction. Any evidence to the contrary will be murky for a while and therefore won't convince him to go against his gut.

What will it take for McConnel to budge? That’s always been the question.

If you’re a republican and you lose non-college whites, what do you even have?

I think most  prefer it to happen after his term.Just not sure it will make it that far.

The Mueller report will be the final nail. Once that comes out the landslide begins

Whether or not he makes a deal and resigns is another question. He's so far in I don't know if he can deal his way out. He might need to go to prison plain and simple

Pressure from more of his colleagues.

I think this is a sign that Graham is starting to crack.

He wanted Trump to declare an emergency bc then it'd go to the courts and take heat off Republicans. Trump didn't.

Now he's pushing Trump to open it for a short time so they can negotiate.

Trump wants them to just fall in line and continue to back him. I don't think that happens. I think either they talk him into caving or Republicans start backing a CR enough to over ride his veto.
