kyle021 Posted February 24, 2012 Report Share Posted February 24, 2012 I would say ref calls and non-calls, which affect pretty much every close game, factor into a team's luck. How many times have we as Titans fans been furious about the Titans losing a game because of a bad call or non-call by an official. I can remember several instances. And if the calls were made the other way the outcome of the season would have been totally different (the Flacco throw after the play-clock hit 0 is the most obvious one but there are a ton over the years that you could look back on). That's the same for every team. However, the defense that people have to that is that the calls even out in the end. No, they don't. That's why there's a tremendous amount of luck involved in these games. To me the worst blown call in the past few years was the refs not callung the delay of game on Flacco after 3 seconds in the 08 divisional playoff game Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Maybe if britt never goes down and Morgan doesn't just marginally improve at the end of the year but goes on a historical tear... then we have a shot. Our season was over 1Q into week three. OILERMAN Posted February 24, 2012 Report Share Posted February 24, 2012 If you really look at the Titans last season down the stretch you can argue they were one of the worst teams in the league. Not a team close to winning the SB. They needed a 4th down TD in the 4th quarter against just a pitiful TB team that turned the ball over 5 times. Struggled to beat a terrible Bills team Lost to the Saints Blown out against the winless Colts Won a close game to the terrible Jags Struggled to beat the Texans back-ups with their 4th string QB, the Texans basically let them win. I'm sorry but these last 6 games the Titans were absolutely terrible. Now one big problem was the QB play and Locker can potentially improve that. But this defense needs major help. If they do not greatly improve their pass rush they are no where near close to a SB. And Locker does need to pan out. He'll likely have ups and downs his first year as a starter. If you want to point to the Titans horrible loss to the Colts then fine. The Giants got blown out in that same weekend in NY by the Redskins. The Titans actually had a better 2nd half record than the Giants did. And if you want to talk about the Titans getting lucky in certain games (TB, Hou) or playing a close game at Buffalo then fine. The Giants lost at home to a lousy Seahawks team who NEVER plays well on the east coast. They barely beat the Dolphins who at the time were winless and in fact had a double digit 2nd half deficit against them. In New York. I already covered their amazing fortune in the Arizona game where Victor Cruz fumbled and the refs blew the call. They'd have lost that one and not even made the playoffs if not for that play. They nearly lost at home to the Bills, the same Bills team that Oilerman likes to rip on. The Giants, as another poster pointed out, were extremely fortunate to beat Dallas in week 14 at Dallas. And they were swept by the 5-11 Redskins with Rex Grossman at QB. The Titans were certainly not as good as the Giants on paper and clearly the Giants played their best football beginning week 17, a lot like 2007. However, to say that the Giants were extremely fortunate and a mediocre regular season team would have been an under statement. We saw how the balls bounced their way all season and a bounce here and a non-blown call there and the Giants are sitting at 5-11, Coughlin is fired, and who knows what else happens. The way the NFL playoffs are set up when you only have to go on a maximum 3 game winning streak to get to the Super Bowl any team in the playoffs can get there. And the fact is is the AFC was weak (NE was the weakest team to come out of the AFC since SD in 1994 IMO) so yes, the Titans certainly could have gotten into the playoffs and made a run. They'd have played Houston who they knew well, NE who was flawed, and Baltimore who they already beat this season. Would they have done it? Highly unlikely.
