scine09 Posted February 24, 2012 Report Share Posted February 24, 2012 It's not an excuse oldschool, it's a fact. The difference between a talented 5-11 team and a 9-7 team is very thin. The Titans could have gone 5-11 with the talent they had last year and I don't think anyone would have been surprised. They also could have been the same 9-7 team that they were and the Bengals could have just lost one of the close games that they won or better yet the Jets could have defeated Miami in the last game getting the Titans into the playoffs and went into Houston and beat the Texans and I don't think anyone would have been surprised. Then you're talking about a team in the final 4 of the conference, 2 wins away from a Super Bowl, in a weaker than average AFC. I remember one year the Packers lost a ton of close games and went 6-10. That team was as talented as any team in the NFC. The Cardinals represented the NFC in the Super Bowl that season. Jamalisms Posted February 24, 2012 Author Report Share Posted February 24, 2012 Get a guy like Victor Cruze to emerge from nowhere and end up having a better year than Nicks who everyone already thought was a solid #1, have your QB emerge and play easily his best season, by far, and barely sneak into the playoffs with some help from above, but playing your best right then... Is this a team that anyone thought was a SB champ per-season? How about when dude made his drunken 'mow your lawn' bet for the Giants to even get in? scine09 Posted February 24, 2012 Report Share Posted February 24, 2012 In the pre-season most in the NY area, at least on the talk shows, thought it was a 6-10 team, Coughlin's last year, etc. The Giants were taking a ton of heat for not going out in free agency and improving their team, they had a ton of injuries to overcome on defense, and confidence was not very high on Manning. And then in week 1 they go to Washington and get destroyed and Manning looked like the Manning of last year. I thought with all that said that the Giants were going to be a trainwreck and possibly be in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. Their schedule in the 2nd half was brutal and it's amazing that the Giants were able to fight through everything that came to them and even win 8 games let alone the Super Bowl. The Giants were not lucky this year. They have tons of talent an overcame a rash of injuries and a tough schedule. I don't particularly like the Giants but it certainly didn't bother me at all that they won. But tell me what I said is nonsense. Go back to the beginning of the year, look at the Giants, with an injured Osi, an injured Tuck, a completely depleted secondary, an injured LB corp, a completely new set of unproven and not really highly thought of tight ends, and their impossible schedule from week 9 on, especially after the week 1 blowout at Washington and the declines of the last 2 seasons by the Giants and tell me that the Giants didn't look like a team ready to crash and burn. And I still think had that Cruz call not been made and had the Cowboys not completely choked away a 12 point lead late then the wheels would have come off and you'd be looking at a team with a new coach and people would still be questioning the QB. They had 4 games this year where they were extremely fortunate to win and one bounce here or there and yes they're anywhere between 8-8 and 5-11. As Oilerman pointed out, Tony Romo had Miles Austin wide open in the Sunday night game that the Cowboys blew the 12 point lead in the last 5 minutes and had he been able to hit him, a play the 9 time out of 10 he connects on, it's a sure TD and the Giants miss the playoffs. Or if the ref doesn't botch the call on Victor Cruz the Giants miss the playoffs. Then they had games against poor AFC East teams at home that they trailed in, by double digits in the 2nd half against Miami and the Buffalo game came down to the wire. I'm not trying to take anything away from the Giants. But they were extremely fortunate. Just think, if the ref doesn't blow that obvious call on Cruz then there's no playoffs for the Giants. If Tony Romo doesn't miss Miles Austin or the Cowboys defense doesn't fold in the last 5 minutes, giving up 2 scores, then there's no playoffs for the Giants. And let's not forget that this is the same team who got shreded in the 4th quarter by Vince Young, in NY. I mean how many games did the Giants win by more than 4? Four games, total. And in one of those 4 games, at Philly, they trailed in the 4th quarter. Wrap your head around that for a second. The Super Bowl champs won only 56.25% of their games, the lowest % of any team to win the Super Bowl, and in the 9 games that they did win, 5 of them were by 4 points or less. Stunning. Their average margin of victory was 8.22, which I would stunned is not the lowest of any Super Bowl champion of all time. And, to make matters worse, they were OUTSCORED BY 6 POINTS ON THE SEASON!!! I bet that's also never happened. I can't think of another team who has won a Super Bowl that could just as easily have finished in last in their own division and missed the playoffs. They remind me a lot of the Cardinals in baseball how they got in due to another team's monumental collapse (Atlanta) and then got hot and went on to win the whole thing. titansrule19 Posted February 25, 2012 Report Share Posted February 25, 2012 But this defense needs major help. If they do not greatly improve their pass rush they are no where near close to a SB. And Locker does need to pan out. He'll likely have ups and downs his first year as a starter. I disagree about the major help, our secondary is very solid and our LBing core has two emerging young players in Ayers and McCarthy, both played lights out and showed tremendous potential. The defensive line can get a lot better with one solid pass rusher and we have a chance to fill that this offseason.
