As explained this is the letter written to the Editor for the San Francisco Chronicle by a Saints fan.

You would expect some hostility , but should you really have to fear for your life or your families lives?

Has anyone ever had this type of experience as Titan fans?

I have been to Qualcom and the Black Hole in Oakland.

I first went to San Diego in 2004. The Chargers were really bad for a while and this is the season when Drew Brees started to take off. Billy Volek started this game for the injured McNair and it started out as a shoot out, but ended in a Charger blow it. I really didn't tailgate at all so I don't know how the pregame experience was. As far as during the game, it was a pretty quiet day. Sure a little bit of jeering here and there, but nothing like what would make me feel like my life was in danger. After the game the Charger fans seemed to be pretty shocked that they had a won a game and it seemed like they didn't know how to react.

I also went to Oakland that season to see the Titans play the Raiders. I was nervous about this game, so I wore all black and had a Charles Woodson jersey. The cover worked for a while, until it was obvious that I was a Titan fan. Before, during, and after the game it was a good experience despite Titans loss to KFC. I sat with Ken Amatos family.

I went to San Diego again in 2006 and wore VY Texas jersey. Fun game, The Chargers were a lot better team and there was a little more trash talk from Charger fans, but other than that it was a fun. I met Travis Laboy's mom and Pierce2Walker (Where are you???).

So, what should the NFL, MLB and NBA do about these fans. It seems like everything has been taken to the extreme now a days. I mean, look at what happen at Dodgers stadium almost a year ago. It's absolutely disgusting to hear about this type of behavior.

I haven't been to an NBA games in which the fans have gotten out of hands, but I have been to a few Angel games that got ugly (Especially when the play the Yankees and Dodgers)

If more and more of these stories starting coming out it wouldn't surprise me if fans starting carrying stuff to protect themselves against this jerks.

Anyone have any stories?

I watched some white guy in a Blaine Bishop jersey beat the piss out of some mexican thug in a Chargers jersey in the parking lot after one of those Chargers/Titans games. It was one of the two games you mentioned but not sure which one. Bongo later claimed the guy in the Bishop jersey was his nephew or something.

Too many gang-bangers (or wannabes) in California unfortunately. Obviously sporting events (team - us vs them mentality) draw a lot of these guys to stadiums. It probably doesn't help that a lot of people here are really sensitive profiling these kind of guys so it makes it harder to enforce. Personally, they need to up the security and institute a zero tolerance policy for any legitimate harassment.

The California State University system banned alcohol in order to curb hooliganism during college games already. Can't buy a single beer at college games.

I've been to three Chiefs/Titans games at Arrowhead and haven't seen any violence inside or outside the stadium. There was profanity inside the stadium but it was directed toward the players/coaches more than anything. There was some trash talk, but, when you're going into an opponent's stadium wearing clothes for the road team you have to expect it.

You'll probably get booed walking into the stadium before the game and then after it's over, if the Titans lost, you'll probably hear a couple "Titans suck!" zingers.

Been to two Ravens/Titans games in Baltimore.

First one was the playoff game in 03... I got there a little late, so I didn't deal with any pregame stuff... but when the game was being played all I really got was dirty looks. The atmosphere of the game itself was amazing... stadium was shaking the entire time. After the game I got quite a few congratulations from the fans.

Second was in the midst of our 10-0 run a few years ago. There was a lot of good natured heckling while I was walking past tailgaters... i enjoyed it. The fans were pretty pissed after the game because of the call on T.Suggs for that 'blow' to KFC's head... but nobody got violent... at least not with me.

From innocuous (ATL, JAX, ATL SB34, SD) to constant smack (HOU, JAX AFC-C) to bellicosity (BAL 2001) to scary (MIA night gm).

I am done wearing jerseys to night away games. In fact, the only away game that holds any interest is Green Bay for the Lambeau experience.

Been to several Dolphins games in Miami, wearing various Titans jerseys, with nothing but good-natured trash talking. Then again, I was with my brother who always was wearing his Marino jersey, and he is a pretty intimidating guy when he wants to be.

Been to a Falcons game in Atlanta. No problems inside the stadium but did have a couple of guys follow me to my car. I "enlisted" some other Falcon fans in some conversation until the other guys decided to leave the area. Felt a great deal of relief.

Been to a Colts game. A lot of trash talking both inside and outside the stadium, but no physical threats that I could tell.

Frankly, with some of the things that have happened in the last couple of years, I am reluctant to travel to other arenas. Wish I didn't feel that way, but I do.

The worst experiences I have had by far were in Buffalo (Orchard Park). Those fans make Cleveland fans look like Mother Teresa. I went to the two playoff games there (Oilers lost both games). Before the 2nd playoff game (yes, THAT one), I was literally chased in the parking by a gang of Bills fans. I was running for my life. Luckily, I got away. Given the experience of having seen that game (there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about it) and the experiences with those fans, I have not been back to Buffalo since, and I don't think I will.

Cleveland fans are also really bad. While inside the stadium, Browns fans wearing dog masks came right up to me and barked right in my face. They also threw large Milk Bone dog biscuits at me.

The AFC Championship game in Jacksonville was also pretty bad. The person behind me literally started poking his finger in my back. By the end of the game, once they saw they were going to lose, it calmed down a bit.

Nice places to see a game are Pittsburgh (really nice - I have been there 4x and I have only kind things to say about those fans), Meadowlands is OK (Jets and Giants), New England fans were nice (been there 2x), Cinci was OK. DC was OK, although the night before the game while hanging out in Georgetown, I ended up hanging out with some nice folks I met at one of the bars, but one of them was wearing a Browns jacket and he refused to even shake my hand (LOL).

The Super Bowl in Atlanta was very civilized.

I just went to Houston (Reliant) for the first time earlier this month and the fans were extremely nice, but I was wearing my Oilers cap. Folks around town treated me like royalty for wearing an Oilers cap.

Been to GB (2008 preseason), STL (2005 no jersey), DET (2008), CHI (2008), CIN (2007), and IND (2006 no jersey, 2007, 2009, 2011) with no issues. A little bit of smack and trash talk, but nothing malevolent and I'd expect no different at a road game. I try to keep my cheering respectful and toned down compared to trips to LP Field and especially my couch, and keep the language clean.

I have a proven method. When I go to road games, as soon as I get to my seat, I try to engage fans of the opponent that are sitting around me, even to the extent that I offer to buy them a beer and do so and then make small talk with them before the game. Then after kickoff, if the Titans are doing well, I cheer and cheer loud but I DO NOT talk trash at away games. I'm in THEIR house. I've been to games in Atlanta, New Orleans and Indy all with no problems and we won every game. I'm sure just like on "any given Sunday", the possibility of running in to a first class asshole is possible anywhere, especially where alcohol is involved. I have been treated well on the road and so I try and respect opposing teams fans in Nashville. A little good natured trash talk maybe but thats it. What goes around comes around.

Personally I've never really had any bad experiences at a game but I usually go with about four or five of my military buddies so that stops most people from bothering us.

Went to the Carolina game this year and even went bar hopping with some Carolina Fans after the game. Really like Charlotte, it reminds me some of Nashville.
