tgo
@Jonboy @OILERMAN Finally getting to listen guys, great podcast. I mentioned earlier in the year that I was torn on LeBeau and I’ve gone back and forth. This game (and that quote from Garoppolo) really prompted me to re-evaluate and do some research and thinking on this defense. I’m no longer torn, they need to let LeBeau fade into the sunset. It’ll be easy too since his contract is expiring and Mularkey will need scapegoats. Pittsburgh let him go for a reason, and here’s a large part of the reason why: LeBeau, and then Horton felt like they needed to take the traditional LeBeau zone blitz defense and turn it into a defense that utilizes a lot of the same blitz concepts but plays variations of man coverage behind it. This scheme is basically the same scheme that Horton ran, but it’s not quite the same scheme that Pitt runs now. We’ve been running this blitz heavy man coverage defense for 4 years now under Horton and LeBeau and it obviously just doesn’t work, for the reasons Oilerman mentioned on the podcast. You can play this fire zone blitz based defense (often rushing 4) and have real success if you play a lot of zone coverage behind it like Pittsburgh does now under Keith Butler after LeBeau left. LeBeau used to play mostly zone when his defenses were truly successful as well. The issue is that the players love LeBeau, and if they perceive it as him getting scapegoated, there will be problems in the locker room and it could shake the team’s faith in Mularkey further. It will need to be handled very delicately and in a straightforward and transparent way by Mularkey. There are a lot of intricacies that I’ll discuss later with the coverage schemes that exacerbate the existing underlying issues regarding not being able to switch corners around to match up properly with top receivers, and this is another big issue with LeBeau. Regardless, it is my strong feeling that LeBeau will be out no matter whether we make the playoffs or not. But we’ll see. If he gets extended, it’s another indictment on Mularkey if Mularkey is even around. Regarding the discussion on JRob vs Mularkey’s contract: Robinson got a promotion to EVP and a 1 year extension this last offseason per my understanding, and is now signed through the 2020 draft. Mularkey’s contract expires in Febuary of 2019, so he’s only under contract for one more year of course. So no, the contracts are not tied together and Robinson’s situation, imo, won’t be tied down to Mularkey because Mularkey is a guy he inherited. When it comes down to extending Mularkey, imo you either extend him or fire him, regardless of the message extending him after a failed season sends to the fans. If not, you risk losing young promising position coaches that transcend regimes like Arthur Smith the TE coach, or Jason Michael unless he is promoted (which he should be). I’m not an anti Robiskie guy, but Michael’s IQ is probably double that of Robiskie’s hah. I think if they’re not going to extend Mularkey’s contract, they need to just fire him. Jamalisms
Gonna be a real awkward battle of narratives when we hold the Rams to 10 points, score 40... and the Jags get crushed by SF.

Could you imagine? Going from talk of finishing 8-8, missing the playoffs, and making coaching changes to having a home game to decide the division? Titans279
It’s definitly possible. People were too sure we’d win during our winning streak and now they’re too sure we’ll lose. Emotions.

Pretty much the only reason I entertain a real possibility of winning - people are too convinced we can't.

Jamalisms
The context that would make this an upset spot is an underperforming home team in a must win and something of a trap game for the opponent. Decent recipe for a wake-up game, not that I'm actually predicting it... just noting the possibility is a decent bit higher than fans seem to think. IsntLifeFunny
What will be the icing is if we win the Rams game, lose a close one to the Jags, miss the playoffs, and Mularkey gets extended.
ChesterCopperpot1
This was the most @OILERMAN has made sense, and I do agree with him for the most part. However, i do not believe the team will let Mularkey go into his 3rd year as a lame duck. As much as I hate Robiskie, this is malarkey's offense, and even if there is a change, I do not think it will have much of an effect. Regarding LeBeau, you're right: this defense feasts on bad QBs. Against good QBs, LeBeau has been bad for awhile now. Regarding Robinson, he does have to have to answer for his picks. The "trade" with the Rams has given us Conklin, Davis, Johnson, Henry, Dodd, among others. Of those picks, only one -- Conklin -- appears to be good. Now, I am not giving up on Davis right now -- and it is easy to look back and say woulda, coulda, shoulda -- but he does not appear to be the impact player you expect with the 5th overall pick.
