Derek Carr is another recent example. His deep ball #s were very poor as a rookie. He had one of the worst YPA ever. He really improved in both areas last season. I agree that players shouldn't be pigeonholed so early in their careers. Mariota's been in the league one season. Players grow and evolve like you said. Matt Ryan was Top 7 in 2011 and 2010 with Mularkey. What's the concern? Mariota will probably have more passing attempts than league average in 2016. Unless you're Tom Brady or a Manning, chances are you're outside the Top 10 in pass attempts. Brees was narrowly Top 10 in the regular season (by 2 pass attempts) when the Saints won. Tom Brady was 10th in pass attempts during one of his Super Bowl wins as well. Throwing a lot isn't the key to winning, nor is it fundamental to a quality quarterbacking. I don't buy that Mularkey is going to use Mariota as a running QB in some type of throwback offense. Then, serious question, why cite a guy with super low pass attempts on a losing team as an example of passing often enough? 27.8 pass attempts per game is nothing. It's not average.
