But when losing like that team did, want is irrelevant and need takes over. 27.8 is low in that instance. As it is in every instance. It was even low for that team in that year. I'm not trying to be combative, I just don't see how the example makes sense. So, if Mularkey has a bad QB on a bad team... really low (NFL low) passing attempts. If that's not the point... I don't get it and/or I don't think you're right on where it fits in the actual passing stats across the league. I'm trying not to lose the forest for the trees here. You're saying you don't want Gabbert to throw at all, but that 28 is too low. That's very much a non-answer. Are we worried that that Mularkey will have Mariota throw less than one of the worst QBs in the league? If he throws more, than we're in the 30-35 P/A average. Where's the issue? The hand-wringing is reaching unnecessary levels. I don't think Mularkey is a particularly good coach, but I don't have any anxiety about him unnecessarily limiting his pass attempts because he hasn't really done that at any point in his coaching career. Also, in 2012 the Jacksonville team was 11th in pass attempts as a team.

I'd be shocked if Mularkey said that, though. He seems to fight the all-run impression every chance he can. I'll be pissed if they run Mariota much. That's worse than trying to grind out a run game decades after it's wise. Scrambling on broken plays is different.
Cyrus
Jamal, I think this is colored greatly by a fantasy football-esque level of analysis than one grounded in real football situations. If Mularkey passed for 28 P/A per game with a truly cringeworthy QB, then why worry? Why all the damned hand-wringing? If Mariota passes for 30+ P/A per game with an effective rushing game, where is the issue?

Cowboys (12-4, lost in divisional round of playoffs). 2015: Chiefs (Lost in divisional round of playoffs), Rams (7-9), Bills (8-8), Vikings (11-5, lost in wildcard round) So...8 teams. 6 went to playoffs. Only one was below .500 (and only 1 game below .500 at that). But of those teams above, at least 3 used ZR/Spread concepts extensively, and Carolina with a throwing TE at QB wasn't far behind. Only Dallas used the run game in the way I believe Mularkey intends to. I think this is what many posters here fear about the (lack of) use of Mariota's existing skillset, considering he was one of the most prolific ZR/Spread QBs ever in college. But I know he can do those things. I want him to apply himself to NFL game concepts, and the classics are the best place for him to start doing that. (Without Whis turning him into a punching bag in the process) In that regard I believe this is a great coaching staff for him at this point in his development. Cyrus
Florio is just part of the media echo chamber. Even if Florio insinuated that Mariota will throw 18 times per game in a Tebow-style offense it would run contrary to Mularkey's history as a head coach and coordinator. I mean, isn't that splitting hairs? 50/50 run/pass scenario in the area is VERY run heavy in todays NFL. Only one team ran more than 50% last year, and only two the year before. Link. They might sound different, but he's basically saying the same thing two different ways.

The only reason we're discussing 28 pass attempts per game is because you cited it and said it was average. Which it isn't. I think Gabbert is entirely irrelevant to the discussion for multiple reasons. As I've said more than a few times. You are the one talking about Gabbert. I have a fundamental disagreement that the Seahawks and 49ers were using ZR/Spread concepts extensively. Some? Definitely. But, those offenses were rooted in core running concepts without any bells and whistles. I expect our offense to be very similar to those, including the implementation of ZR/Spread/RPO/No huddle. I think Gabbert is entirely irrelevant to the discussion for multiple reasons. As I've said more than a few times. You are the one talking about Gabbert. I said the extrapolated statistic is around average over a multi-year period. (around 18-22 ish*) . That's in a scenario in which Gabbert is the quarterback. As noted earlier, he was 11th in P/A with Henne and Gabbert that year. I honestly (and I mean honestly) don't know why the point is lost on you. If one of the worst quarterbacks in recent times threw the ball for 28 P/A Avg. under Mularkey, why would you worry about Mariota? If a worst-case quarterback scenario lands you in that territory, why the fretting? EDIT: *Yes, on a team basis this is near last, when sorting by individual quarterbacks it's not. So yes, a 448 P/A on a team basis would be near last over a multi-year basis. I get the discrepancy. I am however tired of the meaningless statistical argument. ** Yes I am prepared for you to say that I mentioned his statistical average of Gabbert first. The difference is that I saw that as an indication that Gabbert threw more than he ever conceivably should, while you presumably looked to other averages. *** Jamal thought Mularkey had Gabbert throw 28 more times per game then he should have. Therefore he is worried that he will have Mariota throw less than he should.
