If Jaylon Smith really has peroneal nerve palsy he is unpickable.  Unless that nerve regenerates he is basically a cripple, unable to play football.  I wouldn't touch him wiith a hundred foot pole unless he shows complete regeneration of the nerve.  At best, i would sign him as an undrafted free agent.  There is no way to know if he will ever play again for 6 to 12 months

At the same time, the vast majority of late round draft picks won't be playing either because they suck.

Exactly. Most guys taken in the 5th or later don't survive 2 years in the NFL. I don't have a problem taking Smith in the 5th and seeing if he pans out. If not, who gives a fuck? The risk reward in such a scenario is heavily slanted in favor of reward.

Reggie Ragland might be a better lb anyway.

Not even close.

They are two very different types of players that had very different assignments in college ball.  I'd take Ragland against the run every time, but Jack if I wanted a coverage guy.  There's very little overlap in the two players' skill sets thus far in their careers.

Yes they often played different roles, but Jack is still simply a better, more valuable player.

I agree with this 12,000%.. Since you are a "risk-taker" by these standards , what's your thought on earlier due to the train of thought that we have a whole slew of picks to take a gamble on one.

Without the knee issue I would agree, especially in this pass-happy league.  But, If I had to play against LA/Gurley and/or SEA/Lynch in my division I'm not sure I wouldn't go with Ragland.

If Jack's injury concerns are a real problem then it's very close.

Sure everything is up in the air after the injury. But it sounded like you were saying RR may have been better anyway, as in even before the injury, and I strongly disagree. Jack is imo easily one of the top players film-wise for this year.

I really like Ragland, though. I think he's exactly the kind of ILB we've been missing. I understand the worries about him in coverage, though. Will we have to pull him off the field on third down? Maybe....but I think DLB could get creative and use Ragland as a pass rusher.

If he's still sitting there in the 5th, why would you even slow down to think about it on your way to turn in the card?

Hell, if he's there in the 4th, I think real hard about trading up because the talent at the back end of this draft is underwhelming imo.

Ragland and Williamson are the same guy. I think we need a faster all around ILB. Ragland is more of a thumper. Myles Jack would be perfect.
