But he said he’s been told his nerve damage will heal eventually, and when that happens he’ll play at a high level again. “Nerves heal on their own,” Smith said. “From everything my doctor has said, I’ll be 100 percent, it’s just a matter of when.” Smith was walking without a limp at Notre Dame’s Pro Day and showed impressive upper-body strength, putting up 23 repetitions in the 225-pound bench press. “I’m feeling normal again,” Smith said. “The knee is doing great. The nerve is just a matter of everything coming back. But the rehab is going great. I’m squatting over 400 pounds, I’m leg pressing over 600 pounds. It’s just a matter of time. If he continues to show progress in his recovery, what round do teams start to consider Smith? I don't know about round 3, but if he's still sitting there at the top of round 4, it's tempting. I'm no doctor by any stretch. I don't know how similar Smith's injury is to Spence, but Spence was able to make a comeback. It'll take patience with Smith, but it might be worth the risk. Too rich to take such a risk. if we were a team with fewer holes and we had a lot of extra picks then maybe you could do that. Now if he falls to our 4th rounder, I'd strongly think about it. They have two picks. never understood this mentality -- esp for a 2nd rd pick. they have the "extra" pick for a reason, which means they gave up something pretty valuable, probably the equivalent of a starter. Why would a team then discount that "extra" pick like found money? Esp in this case for the Pats, where they are missing their #1 and need draft results very soon, not flyers. He would've been an ILB for us but somebody posted a practice of his where he was lining up off the edge & rushing the passer & I was shocked at how explosive he was. Amazing how they went from one of the deepest teams in the league into a team with a ton of holes so quickly. Those injured players they took also did not pan out.
