My point and general disgust with this whole, ahem, - process - is they could've taken a chance on a coach with the potential to become elite. Or even a coach with the potential to become above average. Heck, with the many assets we had in our favor, maybe they could've tried a little outside the box thinking to pry an elite name from the college ranks or one of the retired NFL coaches. I could understand if they had settled for a known "average" coach (i.e. John Fox). But instead they settled for a guy who hasn't even shown he can be average. We're all sitting here going through his past stops hoping they were all aberrations and that Robinson will bring in all this elite talent to make up for Mularkey being average. I'd much rather be sitting here talking about Robinson and Mariota's potential, plus that of a guy like Gase/Jackson/Toub/etc and their potential to become the next Zimmer or Arians. Instead, here we are...hoping and praying Mariota is elite and Mularkey isn't as bad as he has been. I didn't want a retread either and would have preferred someone else but I don't think he's terrible. The bottom line is that he has Mariota so there are no more excuses. Jamalisms
Just to confirm: Nobody who's coached three (or more) teams in the Super Bowl era has ever had as bad a record as Mularkey after 57 games. Next worst guy is Norv Turner. Guy after that is Forest Gregg. They both have above a .400 record after 57 games while Mularkey is at .316. They also are the only two other guys to coach 3+ teams and still end up with a losing record. We're hoping for a miracle.
Starkiller
How many of those guys got fired after just 1 season without a chance to improve? Mularkey's first season as HC he had a winning record with a quality roster. Don't pretend he can't win. It was only after that where he got stuck with guys like JP Losman and Blaine Gabbert that he lost games.

I'd also be curious to see what the record of other interim HC are. I doubt it's very good. Arians taking over for Pagano is the only recent one that comes to mind that was really successful

What if he's a Flacco? Or Dalton? Or Rivers? They're "franchise QBs" but I don't know that any of the 3 are good enough to overcompensate for sub-par coaching. Those are guys who are good enough to win SBs, but shy of being elite. If Mariota turns out to be a QB at that tier, it would sure help to have elite coaching that could help elevate the team further. I think the best hope for Mularkey is his career ends like Jim Mora's. He gets us to the playoffs in back-to-back years, but then we move on because we don't see him getting over the hump. And even Mora was a guy who'd been to the playoffs before as a HC.

I'm not going through that entire list, but Norv a Turner started out with a 3 win season and they didn't fire him. I suspect Mularkey got fired simply because they brought in a new GM who wanted his own coach. But regardless, it's not like the Jags were so much better off by dumping Mularkey. They won just 7 games over the next 2 years because of their lack of talent at the time.

Three is more than two and Norv is an abject failure as a coach. I'll give you that Norv is a far better comparison than Walsh and Belichick but he's a sub .500 career coach and Mularkey is looking up at him. We'll have beaten the odds and Mularkey improved his standing if he gets to be Norv Turner - a guy that effed up YEARS of patience with Phillip Rivers in his prime. That makes me feel great about Mariota. How about you?
Starkiller
I don't expect Mularkey to be around for a long time. But I do think he can help develop Mariota. And if he gets a quality roster, he has proven that he can win. No one is pretending he is some superstar coach. But he is a capable head coach who qualifies as a safe pick in the face of a bunch of alternatives who were not considered to be all that great. Starkiller
How about making a totally unproven OC with no track record and without a pedigree of success the new HC (Gase)? Or bringing in a guy who famously had personality issues that screwed up their team (McDaniels or Kelly)? Or hiring a coach who had no experience as either an OC or DC (Taub)? As I said, Mularkey has proven he can win games given sufficient talent to work with. And he had the support of the players, so personality clashes don't seem to be an issue. That makes him a safe choice. You are fixated on his record and ignore the fact that even Belichik would have a losing record trying to coach the teams that Mularkey has been given.
