One argument for an offensive minded HC is the stability it provides long term.

Think about how Kyle Shanahan and Gase are potentially being hired away after one year with their new teams. If the new OC has success, he could very well be hired away for a HC position and you're possibly starting over again with new OCs and new systems.

Would miss Brady sooo badly immediately, & ultimately fail due to his spread QB having irreparable flaws at the "core" of his game.

My god, it must be a dire day when even BK is using sarcastic quotation marks around core

What in the hell has Josh McDaniels accomplished other than existing on a great team that inspires so much confidence?

He was the hottest name a few years ago and it was a huge disaster.  For the life of me, I can't figure out why people look at that and say, yea, that's the guy I want.

Interesting that everyone seems to feel it's a forgone conclusion that Mariota needs an offense-minded HC.   Personally, I think MM is coming along just fine and won't require spoon-feeding or hand-holding from an offensive-oriented HC.

Think about the greatest QB's of the past 20 years and the coaches who developed them.   Over the past several years, we've had the privilege of watching some of the best QB's in league history...many of whom were developed under defensive-minded head coaches.

Tom Brady was developed under world-renowned defensive guru Bill Belichick.

Peyton Manning was coached by Jim Mora and Tony Dungy...both of whom were former defensive coordinators.

Drew Brees and Marty Schottenheimer.  Ben Roethlisberger and Bill Cowher.  Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll.

I don't blame people for wanting a coach who can get the most out of Mariota....but the fact is, over the past couple decades, the lion's share of Super Bowl championships have been won by defensive-minded coaches with quality quarterbacks.   There are obviously a few exceptions....Kurt Warner/Dick Vermeil, Aaron Rodgers/Mike McCarthy...maybe even Drew Brees/Sean Payton.  But these exceptions are few and relatively far between.

IMO, Mariota is going to be a damned good QB regardless of who's coaching the team.   As such...while there are a number of qualified coaching candidates with offensive backgrounds, history suggests that the organization might be better served hiring a tough defense-minded coach and leaving Mariota's development to the OC and QB coach.

Exactly. This team just needs to hire whoever they feel is the best coach, period. If that's a young offensive guy, fine, but that shouldn't be the main criteria. I think Vic Fangio would be a very good choice for example.

Look at the young QB's like Bortles, Carr, and Bridgewater. They all have defensive HC's. Winston also.

The actual offense the Patriots run would be perfect for Mariota.  I worry about McDaniels being a complete prick and trying reinvest the wheel like he did in Denver.  I also worry that he'll try to cheat again like he did in Denver.

Agreed....

The short passing game, use of TEs and RBs would really help Mariota's game.

I don't care if the coach is "defensive minded" as long as he hires a OC who gets the most out of Mariota. I also think that should include more pieces that excentuant the short passing game.

Agreed.

A strong head coach must have a detailed vision for the entire team as a whole.  Mariota is obviously the most important piece of the puzzle...but at the end of the day, there are a whole lot of pieces that must fit together, and Mariota is just one piece.

If anything, one could easily argue that Mariota is already developing quite nicely and won't need a lot of special attention;  there are other areas of the team that require far more work.

IMO, a good OC and QB coach will provide Mariota all the coaching he needs.   I want a HC who isn't focused primarily on the offensive side of the ball.   This team needs a guy who understands how to address the team's defensive shortcomings and how to fix the abysmal special teams play we've seen this year.  He must know how to lead an entire team and inspire them to play with toughness and confidence week in and week out.

The bottom line is, the HC is responsible for the finished product...every bit of it.   It doesn't so much matter whether his background is primarily on the offensive or defensive side of the ball....as long as he knows how to manage all of it moving forward.

It came from LaCanfora so take it for what it is but he reported that if hired as a HC Sean McDermott would bring Mike McCoy in as his OC, if SD fires him. That would be a great choice IMO. He's said before that his system is predicated on looking short to deep, and you really see that watching SD. As bad as that overall team is they move the ball up & down the field with limited weapons.

I've seen the pats a few times this year, and I'm seeing some plays I haven't seen from them all year. They are bringing a WR in motion across the formation and hitting him in the flat. They are getting at least 10yds every time they run it.
