The Future is Extremely Bright

The point I had an objection too is that our pass rush is "set" for the foreseeable future. It's not. We do not have our edges set for anything close to the immediate future.

As for Casey, next year is year 6. Massive guys like that generally do not have long careers where they play at elite levels. Still he's the least of our issues.

Planning on Orakpo at 30 years old to play at a high level and stay healthy for the next few years is a bad plan.

A little bit of defensive success this year has no bearing on future years.  Teams bounce all around rating wise every year.  They're in really bad shape.   There are still holes all over.

I'm not so sure they've found a franchise QB either.  Pretty sure they've benched one though.

Will say I was more content with Mariota' s play last night than in any game this year though.  But it was jax.

There's holes all over the offense, not the defense. This is a good, solid defense. But yes, it's difficult to maintain a defense. Same with running games, there's too many pieces involved.

The best way to be good for the long term is find a great QB & constantly replenish the skill positions.

Oh yeah, I'm not opposed to drafting younger front 7 players at all. Webster never did this enough IMO, I would draft an edge rusher each year.

I just finished Bill Polian's book & I believe his approach with the Colts was the optimal one in this day & age. Constantly replenish the skill spots & load up on quick, smaller pass rushers.

Screw the idea of using our top picks or major FA dollars on pass rushers this offseason.

I don't think it's the wisest use of resources to improve an an already productive front 7 when it's obviously the offense  dragging the team down.

We talked about that alot while Polian was still in the league.

You can't spend everywhere in the salary cap era. So Polian believed you spent the money at QB, receiver and edge rushers.

Floyd Reese and Ruston Webster believe you give it to Offensive Guards and Running Backs.

Of course not. The 1st rounder & FA dollars need to go to the offense but I'm certainly not opposed to using our 2nd rounder on an edge rusher if they really like one.

You take the BAP. Period. The good news is the rankings are usually such that you have a few players ranked basically the same and one of those should represent a need especially on this team.

The only excerption is when you need a QB and there is a solution there.

Based on talent on hand, the only offensive player I would be down for drafting in the top 5 is a dominant wideout and there are none that look to be ranked that high.

We're not going Oline or QB again. We are not drafting a RB.

Get ready to watch us draft a defensive player in the top 5 next year.

I am. I don't think you draft a backup in the 2nd, not if you're picking high.

Unless they sign big name OT, WR and DBs in free agency, the first 2 picks better fill holes.

Being satisfied with talents like Derrick Morgan is part of why we are perennial losers.

Imagine bringing in a dominant Rushbacker who you could book end with Orakpo and what type of impact that would have in a Dick Lebeau defense. Is that really so hard?

Which "hole" do you want us to plug with a top 5 pick? Right tackle?

You can never have too many pass rushers. DC's are getting more & more creative & you can move guys around. If we drafted Randy Gregory in the 2nd round, we could kick Morgan to ILB in passing situations, which is what Dom Capers does with Clay Matthews in GB & what Horton used to do in Arizona.

That said, I'm largely in agreement that we pick more of a need position in the 2nd round.

I agree with this, at least this year, and especially at WR. I would go BPA on defense in the draft and go after at least two WRs in FA. I have my mind set on Alshon Jeffrey, but whoever is available that can make the most impact would be great.

Whether or not we do anything to change GM and HC, and especially if we do something, will determine what kinds of moves we make regarding players. But either way the side of the ball that needs the most immediate help is the offensive side. The quickest way to get help is through FA.

It's going to be a truly fascinating offseason. Sad that's already we're were at it, but yeah...

Our biggest areas of concern have to be OL, S, WR, and RB.

RB- I'm almost always against signing a top free agent RB. Someone is going to overpay for Lamar Miller. I'd keep an eye on Charcandrick West. He would be a much younger upgrade to McCluster. He could play himself into a bigger contract though if he keeps playing well. We almost certainly have to draft a RB. I just hope it's not Webster making the pick.

WR- We're incredibly bare here. Honestly, I would start with Wright and DGB. It's time to move on from Hunter and there's really no one else worth talking about on the roster. Douglas will probably be on the team, but I would be fine if they went another direction. I think you have to draft a guy early and sign a WR as well. Jefferey and Sanu are 2 names to keep an eye on (interesting to see how those play out if we hire Gase or Jackson as HC). Crabtree only signed  1-yr deal in Oakland so it'll be interesting to see if he generates more interest this year.

OL- The new coach will have to think long and hard about this. Depending on who you talk to, we either have 2-3 solid pieces to build upon...or none. I'm confident in Lewan, but I wouldn't be disappointed if the moved him to RT. If Tunsil is as good as advertised, he could be a day 1 starter at LT. Or if you like Lewan there better, that's fine too. The point is, Lewan is really the only "building block" we have in my eyes. Warmack will probably be around, but we'll almost certainly see new starters at LG, C, and RT. Yet again, we'll need to look to the draft and free agency here. I wouldn't hate a signing like Russell Okung. He's younger than I expected and would probably be able to move over to RT and extend his career even more.

S- Griffin has been an up and down player for years. I like him as a leader and a person, but it's just time to move on. I think you look to draft a S and let them compete with Stafford. If the Chiefs are seriously dumb enough to let Eric Berry walk, however, then you break the bank to get him. It's so rare for a player of his age and talent to come available. But the Chiefs have cap problems and will have to decide between Hali, Johnson, Houston, and Berry. I think they keep Berry, but who knows. Eric Weddle is probably going to be available, but he'll command a monster deal. Not sure it's worth it on Weddle, but some may feel differently. I admittedly haven't watched him as much as I've seen Berry.

All in all...I'm still working out which areas I want them to target first and where. Today if you forced me to pick the most important, I say WR with the OL mess very close behind.

I agree with OP too...this is a 4 win team this year, next yr we can get 8 wins...these things don't happen overnight, it takes time.

The best thing we have going is obviously MM, his throws were spot on and the ones not within reach were throwaways as the defenders weren't getting to them either. The receivers could have caught so many of those balls...DGB still clueless out there and I love Delanie but he could have reached for that 1st down marker where we were ended 4th and inches. And Douglas just too old and slow. As bad as Kendall and Justin are, they are sorely needed. This is the worst receiving corps in the game now. MM is already as accurate as most good veteran QB's.

What we need most os a good OL. We have no run or deep passing without it. We need to pick up a good OL through the draft and then pick up another one in FA. Then pick up one decent RB and WR through the draft or FA and this team will easily win 8 games next year.

A Jeffery would be ok...a Julian Edelmen type better cause we need the type of receivers who excel at New England as they are quick slant guys who can turn a 10 yard catch into 30. Ezekiel Elliot would be a good choice for RB, explosive and has good speed.

We are a lot closer to being a playoff team than most will admit to.
