I also remember after VY's visit how glowingly they talked about the chalkboard sessions and how smart  VY was. Can you imagine those actual sessions: Fisher walks up to chalkboard, 'Now Vince imagine you have 3 oranges' and draws 3 circles. 'Now imagine we take 2 of those oranges away'picks up eraser and erases 2 of the circles, 'Now how many are you left with? Take your time Vince.'

This likely won't happen. I don't think anyone will root for him to fail because his failure would just confirm what they feared in the first place and would mean another 3 years of mind-numbingly bad football. As much as people love to be right, this is too high a cost to pay. Would they come back on here and rub the Pro-Mariota guys' faces in it? You bet your ass they will. Welcome to the internet.

I definitely think there's certain posters who root for players to fail so that they look good.

Well then that's too bad because it looks petty and everyone knows what your agenda is. Rooting against Mariota is literally rooting for us to have wasted a #2 overall pick. You shouldn't root for the very thing you feared to happen. Even if you look "good" in the end the team still looks like trash.

There may come a day when we all agree on our Quarterback. Today is not that day.

Here's where I am at with this, it's pretty obvious, aside from an unlikely Rivers deal, that my preference is Mettenberger. I think he showed the traits that all too few young QB's show as a rookie on top of having huge arm talent.

That said, the big selling point for us when we hired Whisenhunt was that he had a good offensive system & we trusted him to find our QB. If he's that sold that Mariota is the guy, and he likes him better than Mett, I trust him. It's all we really can do.

What makes me feel better about Mariota is that, unlike most of these athletic QB's, I think he has a very high floor. At worst, he should always be a good game manager who doesn't turn the ball over & can make plays with his legs. I don't think this is VY/Locker all over again, he's much smarter than them, with much better football instincts, more accuracy, and takes better care of the ball. Again, I still hope we pick Leonard Williams & go with Mett but I don't think it's going to happen so I'm ready to get behind MM 100%. I'm also sick & tired of arguing about this & want to talk about other facets of the team.

I'm pretty sure Oman was raving about Clausen before the draft. I remember everyone giving him a bunch of shit when Clausen dropped on draft day.

No, that's actually what's funny. When I memtioned Clausen all the draft nerds said he'd be long gone. It was actually me giving people shit because he wasn't gone.

After Clausen looked terrible titansfan posted, "Remember when Oilerman wanted Clausen?" CMJ style....

After that people like you are "pretty sure"

The fact is I never said I knew anything about Clausen and no one will dig up anything where I did

Which isn't even a big deal because wanting VY drafted is stupider

Damn, I'm gone one day and the thread goes south of the equator. Revisionist history is pointless. You draft a FRANCHISE QB with a top ten pick. Andrew Luck, Cam Newton etc. You don't reach because of need. (see Jake Locker) I don't believe either of the QBs are worthy of the risk of wasting a #2 pick. We have 4 picks in the top 100. Build a stout defense, (see Seattle) and then address the QB position. In the meantime, we can see what we have in Mett. A full season should tell us what we need to know. Or if a free agent deal presents itself for a guy like Rivers, pull the trigger. But I am firmly in the camp of building a stronger roster with these high picks coming up. We are talent challenged.

I don't know who liked Clausen or not but he's the perfect example of how a QB can just fall by the wayside. He was drafted in 2010, when the team was decimated by injuries & John Fox was a lame duck coach who threw in the towel & actually started Brian St. Pierre a few games because he was being a passive aggressive dick & wanted to piss ownership off. Nobody had a chance on that team. Then the next year they get a good OC in Chudzinksi, the OL & Steve Smith get healthy, and they have a dominant running game & WR. Cam comes in & lights it up. Now, I give Cam all the credit in the world, especially coming from the system he had in college. But what if they decided to draft Von Miller? Maybe Clausen comes in & looks great in that offense, he looked good in his one start this year & I read the Bears are pretty high on him.

Mid to late round QB's have almost zero room for error, Nick Foles was absolutely awesome in 2013 than has some ho hum games behind a decimated OL the next year & the Eagles wrote him off. Kirk Cousins was lighting it up, than he pressed & had a bad 2 games of picks & that was it. Mett looked very good for a rookie for 5 games than gets killed behind a horrific OL & the teams moving on, meanwhile Locker got 3 1/2 years of getting injured & sucking before they cast him aside.

I am not a fan of either QB but if you dont take an OLB and are running a DL D...........you better hire a new coach if you draft MM.  Whiz is going to destroy him.  I think you have to have a system to match the skill set.  It is beyond ignorant to make the kid fit in Whiz paradigm.  Whiz is easy to replace and a QB is hard to find.  Fisher made the same mistake several times.

This is exactly how I feel. At least Mariota won't be a colossal bust like Jake.

Oh...but it's entirely possible he is.

People said the same thing about Locker -- "at least he won't be a bust like VY."

Fool me twice, as they say...
