Interesting article. People complain about the number of dink and dunk passes Mariota throws, but according to these metrics it's quite a bit lower than the avg. Mariota also threw a lower % of screens than the average. Winston threw a much higher % of passes 1-5 yards.

The more I research Mariota, the more I like him.

I don't see why he can't be at least as successful as Cam Newton - another guy who came in with the dreaded "system" tag, was less accurate, had far less experience, and was less polished as a passer?

As long as his pro-days don't raise any red flags (like a noodle arm), i'd have no problem with them picking Mariota.

This guy is in no way, shape, or form another Jake Locker.

The question about Mariota is the offense he played in regardless on whether or not he threw it short or long a lot. Granted I didn't read the article.

And when the Titans put him through a w workout, they're not going to work him out in Oregon's offense. They're going to put him through the ringer in our offense.

This is a line I've heard more and more often among scouts and media folks.

Pretty sure @Cyrus said after going back and watching them both, he ended up liking Winston much less than anticipated, and liking Mariota much more.

I think a lot of these numbers mesh with what you see in the games. Mariota's performance vs. pressure/blitz is impressive and is one of his greatest traits. His mobility is so easy and his feet are so coordinated that he can easily evade pressure (in or outside the pocket). There's a degree of confidence in his athleticism too - he doesn't seem to get shaken by the rush because he can escape virtually any defender behind the line of scrimmage.

For me, I want Williams or Mariota. Only two options as far as I'm concerned.

Other than the system concerns, Mariota has just about everything else you're looking for. The guy was a 3 year starter who produced huge numbers and won a lot of games. He has prototypical QB size. Pretty good arm strength. Excellent quickness and mobility. Quick release. Quick feet. Can escape and make plays with his arm and legs. Has pretty much everything you want from a character standpoint. Smart kid. There's a lot to like, which is why I don't think passing on him for Mett is that easy. I absolutely think he's in play for #2.

Nothing will turn this team around quicker than a franchise QB. If you think Mariota can be one, that's hard to pass up. Even if Williams ends up being really good, it's going to look like the wrong pick if Mariota becomes a franchise QB and Mett fizzles. Should we read anything into the fact that only 3 Titans scouts were in attendance at the USC pro day, while pretty much the entire contingent is there to see Mariota? It's not far to take a flight from Southern Cal to Oregon

I'm slowly and extremely cautiously getting on board with Mariota...possibly being...considered...for the Titans...but not...quite....yet.

The buzz will go full-bore after his pro-day today.  Outside of Bridgewater, it's a given that QB's only help themselves on pro-days (even though they really shouldn't matter much).  He also had better than anticipated footwork dropping back at the Combine, so if he's been working on that (of course he has), it'll only make the hype bigger.

He's a real candidate at 2.  People screaming at the top of their lungs that it's purely a smokescreen aren't being honest with the situation.

The article is fair enough in pointing out that their metrics don't reflect game tape - stating that you could see the professional level throws Winston was making for instance whereas a % cannot reflect that.

But these types of things predraft drive me nuts.  Always gets back to the attempt to statistically categorize a player mere or less independently of his coaches, teammates and opponent.  "So and so threw too many screens."  Really?  Maybe you should ask his coach about that.  Not sure your average college QB is calling all those screens by himself.

Last year I saw people try to tear apart Jordan Matthews at Vandy for having caught too high a % of his balls as screens, i.e., can't run routes nor catch downfield.  Rarely saw it mentioned that might have been because the OL there had a hard time giving the QB enough time for longer routes to develop, or that the VU QBs didn't have the arms to consistently get the ball downfield, or that it was one of the only ways to get the ball too their best offensive threat by far since he was usually double or triple teamed.  So that critique got thrown at him and started to stick.... until he got back on an NFL field and executed there.

I think it's fair to watch the games, compile some stats, then watch the games again with the stats sheets in hand.  But as there are no more games to be played until after draft day, it seems so many are content to roll with whatever stat backs up their position.  Or else easily sways their opinion, much like politics, a la from Brutus to Marc Anthony.

Honestly, the combine and Pro Days do very little for me.  I didn't watch him play every down or even weekly but on those late Saturday night games when they were playing--and the one time they murdered my alma mater--I was impressed.

People downplay his accuracy somewhat because he didn't face a pass rush very often or his receivers were open because of the offense being predicated upon mismatches or blown assignments or...whatever...but he's a very accurate passer.  If he's able to hit NFL WR's in stride, it could go a long way in developing Hunter and Wright into the threats they already should be.

The thing is...of all the spread / read option QB's that have come out recently, Mariota seems to have the biggest upside and quite possibly the best head on his shoulders.

I just don't know if he's worth passing up on Leonard Williams...especially since Jacksonville picks right behind us.

I'm scared of Mariota, BUT he's got more talent than Locker did. He loves the game. I still don't buy that Locker didn't, btw. He picked it over baseball, but whatever. Mariota seems to love it. He's pretty accurate, actually. He's tough and fast. But the main thing that would make me OK with him is that we have Mett, so in theory we could sit Mariota for a year or two while Mett gets his chance. If Mett pans out, we have a good backup at a position where backups tend to play at some point. We would also have good trade bait. If Mett doesn't work out, then we have a guy that is a top pick for a reason that would then get a shot. QB is just so important, so if we draft him, I'd be OK with it.
