Peter King: The Truth About Marcus Mariota

Griffin also became a crazy, self-absorbed primadonna who was coddled by the most intrusive owner the league. There's no chance MM turns into that. My preference is still defense but it's a lazy argument to lump all QB's who can run into one category.

Good thing that wasn't what I did.

As per usual you seem to be thinking I'm saying more than I said.

If you look back at NFL Draft history, name a QB other than Luck that people didn't have question marks about. Tom Brady (too skinny, too weak, noodle arm), Aaron Rodgers (Jeff Tedford QB, funky mechanics), Big Ben (level of competition, spread offense), Drew Brees (too short, too small, system questions), Joe Flacco (level of competition), Matt Ryan (average physical tools, 19 INT his senior season), Philip Rivers (funky mechanics). I'm not saying Mariota will be in this company, but you can look at just about any QB in the past where people had question marks. The system is a concern for Mariota, but he seems really bright to me that his ability to transition mentally isn't a huge concern with me.

Even Manning was criticized for having "average tools", he wasn't a good athlete & his arm strength wasn't special.

I think both these kids are great prospects & if it wasn't for Mettenberger it would be a no doubter.

With our luck this is what I believe will happen.

After twice drafting QBs with question marks who ended up failing, we will pass on Mariota for the "sure thing" in Williams.

Mariota will end up being great and Williams will be a disappointment. Mett will be decent but have injury issues.

You guys know it's true.

P.S. Remember Warmack was a safe pick. A "sure thing." To many he was even considered the top prospect in the draft. Keep all this in mind when making proclamations about how great Williams surely will be.

Some people have been hyping Williams so much, they're setting themselves up to be disappointed. I think he'll be really really good, but mentioning him in the same breath with guys like Watt and Merlin Olsen is extreme and unfair to the kid.

I'm not saying draft Mariota, but I think we should definitely consider it. Next year's QB aren't going to be any better. The concerns are legitimate, but he's a kid I'd gamble on. I see more of a bigger Russell Wilson than an RGIII with Mariota. Even if Williams ends up being all that, it's going to look bad if Mariota becomes a franchise QB on another team and Mett fizzles. I know people are scared because we've drafted a QB high twice the last two times and failed both times. Eventually, you have to take a chance at some point.

Warmack still has time to improve.

Sometimes you miss.  Even on sure thing prospects.  It's still safer to take a sure thing interior defensive lineman than a QB coming from a questionable offense.

I have no problem if they take MM.  He's a good prospect and I understand the need to stabilize the QB position.

You have to evaluate Williams and Mettenburger too though and try to project what path gives you the most upside with the least risk.

what? Mett has absolutely no bearing on whether the Titans take a QB. Either these two are elite prospects or they aren't.

Yeah. I don't get the comparison to Bob Griffin at all some are making. Both are mobile QBs but there has never been a question about MMs attitude and work ethic. He for sure isn't a primadonna.

He's a factor because if he wasn't on the roster one of these two guys would automatically be taken whether we think they're elite or otherwise. If we were going into 2015 with Charlie Whitehurst as the projected starter there is no room for discussion at #2.

Of course he does. Yeah, if the team thinks Winston or MM are special, elite QB's they'll take one either way. But if they like but don't love them they'll be much more inclined to pass.

Teams reach for QB's all the time if they're desperate. If they only had Whitehurst they'd almost definitely take one of these two.

I don't buy that. Taking a QB just for the hell of it is a terrible way to approach the draft.

Agree 100%, 2011 is a perfect example. That said, it happens all the time. I think having Mett already here eliminates this option & they'll only take a QB if they love one.

They will take a QB, IMO, if they think he has a significantly higher long term ceiling than Mett.  A marginal difference wouldn't justify the opportunity cost of passing on another position player.

The worries with Marota are quite warranted.

Atheletes who excel as dual threat QBs come out every year, and historically have a high failure rate. It's fine to believe he's different, but you have to really look into where that belief comes from. Would people think this if he played for Kentucky and won 5 games?

There are also lots of highly intelligent, hard working, good character QBs in college that have no chance in the NFL because they don't have the requisite skills.

Mariota's combination of athlecism and intangibles won't make him a quality NFL starter. His arm, decision making under pressure, and ability to read coverages will.

He may have enough of all the above to succeed in an offense tailored to his skills, but I think his passing ability is extremely questionable. Teams who gloss over that deficiency usually get burned.
